This study investigated Japanese prospective science teachers' (PSTs) from a public University in Okayama prefecture about their ideas on how to teach plant biodiversity within Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) framework. Analysis of written lesson plans (N = 63) revealed a strong emphasis on cognitive learning and hands-on strategies, with lesser focus on socio-emotional and behavioral outcomes, and minds-on strategies. The lessons mainly highlighted the environmental contexts of ESD, with less consideration for social, economic, and global contexts. These findings underscore the need for science teacher education programs to deepen PSTs' understanding of holistic ESD pedagogies and interdisciplinary approaches.
