    This experiment was carried out for the purpose of applying the electric spark machining to the roughing operation of the tungsten carbide (WC) drawing die instead of the lapping method, by which it is difficult to obtain the good accuracy of die profile.
    The interesting results obtained are as follows.
    1. There is a certain discharge condition under which the electrode consumption ratio is zero or nearly so in case of machining WC die either with vibrating electrode or with rotating electrode in the water bath.
    2. However, when such a condition is satisfied with vibrating electrode, the machining speed becomes maximum and then the quantity of electrode consumption is so small as to be neglected in practice. On the other hand, the maximum machining speed could not be observed in the range of this experiment using rotating electrode.
    3. Existence of the machining condition described above seems to suggest that there is possibility of elevating the accuracy of die profile or of realizing the profile machining by the electric spark machining process.

    The trial design and manufacture have been made for a transducer useful to measure the surface roughness. For this purpose a slender beam was set. This was soldered on a piano wire it the center of gravity as shown in Fig. 1., in order to give an oscillating motion to the stylus. The stylus was fixed on an end of the beam oscillating around the Piano wire with its natural circular frequency ω.
    When a test piece was put under the oscillating stylus and touched to it, the phase of the oscillation changed abruptly and led to the original phase by an amount of phase angle φ.Where φ was a function of the situation of the test piece. Then by measuring φ (Pulse Time Modulation) the situation of the test piece could be detected.

    In order to obtain the efficiency of the ultrasonic cleaning, we operated the following works : (1) The artificial radioactive dust is obtained by mixing radioactive isotopes P32 with natural dust. (2) This radioactive dust is made to adhere to metal surface to be cleaned. (3) Before and after the operation of ultrasonic cleaning, the radioactivity of the in surface is measured by Geiger Müller counter.
    The cleaning bottle is tilled with liquid of trichloro-ethylene, and the ultrasonic waves are generated in the liquid by barium titanate transducer which is set in the same liquid.
    The quantitative measurement of the radioactivity shows that the ultrasonic cleaning becomes far superior to the conventional mechanical cleaning.
    The cavitation due to ultrasonic waves in the liquid mainly effects the operation for perfect cleaning; in extremely short time.

    This part is the conclusion of previous 12 parts, especially describing the effects of the Pb % on the machinability and the wear resistivity are fully discussed. There are two sides of the effects of Pb on the properties of brass ; one is the static effect and the other is dynamic one. The static one is not so large, but the dynamic one is very severe. So the shock value of the brass containing nearly 2% of Pb is about half of that of ordinary brass without Pb.
    The cutting phenomenon is entirely affected by the dynamic property of the brass to be cut, so the cutting force is rapidly decreased by adding Pb. The wear phenomenon, however, is affected by the dynamic property as well as the static one. Both effects on wear are not so large, that, for example, the brass with more than 2% Pb shows the low resistivity against wear at the annealed state, but if we strengthen its static property by cold working, we have the Pb-brass with nearly as high wear-resistivity as the ordinary brass.

    The relationship between tool-chip contact area and machinability characteristics such as shear angle, chip-thickness-ratio and cutting force was studied in the previous papers. In this report, the effect of tool-chip contact area on the tool life is investigated by using specially designed tools. As it can be supposed by the fact presented by the previous reports that tool-chip contact area is a controlling factor in metal machining, it has been proved that the contact area plays a very important role in tool life. Under the optimum condition of the contact area, the cutting speed for a definite tool life can be increased up to about 140 percent compared with the case of the conventional method.
    The effect of rake angle upon the tool life has also been studied. Finally it hits been demonstrated that the effect of rake angle upon the tool life consists of the contribution of the rake angle itself and that of the tool-chip contact area resulted by the rake angle.
