    There are many materials difficult to machine, such as stainless steels. From a technical standpoint, hot grinding apperars feasible for those materials. It is expected that the metal at elevated temperatures could be removed faster and with less power than could be metal at room temperature. Hot grinding will result in less metallurgicall damage and surface finishes. The present paper describes the results obtained by the grinding experiments of stainless steels at elevated temperature. When the material temperature is about 400°C, grinding force and surface roughness shows a minimum value, and grinding ratio shows a maximum value. Excess cut, that is concave shape, at the central portion of ground surface is observed. The amount of excess cut shows a minimum value at about 400°C, and also the residual stress on machined surface shows a minimum value at the temperature.

    In the present paper, the effects of internal stresses on the wear have been studied by using test plates of mild steel under dry and lubricated conditions. Under dry condition, the wear rate increases with the internal stress regardless of its direction. The wear rate and volume of wear fragments are in linear relations with the elastic strain energy σ2/2E where E is the elastic modulus. The wear mechanism is considered to be the phenomenon due to shearing of adhered points, and the increase in wear rate with the stress is attributed mainly to the growth of wear fragment size. Under lubricated condition, transition points appear in wear curves. The sliding distance to the transition point and the reciprocal of steady state wear rate decrease with tensile stress and increase with the compressive stress. These relations are found to be quite analogous to S-N curve in usual fatigue tests where the mean stress is varried under the constant stress amplitude, and the mechanism of wear is considered as the fatigue of surface asperities.

    The finite element method is applied to analyze the mechanism of orthogonal machining. A computer program is developed which is able to calculate the distributions of displacements, stresses and the cutting force distribution on the tool face, using stress-strain relation and yield stress of the material, the friction between chip and tool, and the shape of free surface as input data. Using this program conditions at the start of cutting and the steady state of cutting are simulated, and the following results are obtained.
    1) At the beginning of cutting operation, the shear zone does not move gradually forward with cutting tool advance, but from the bigining of cutting the shear zone is placed fairly in front of the tool.
    2) At the steady state of cutting the greater part of deformations takes place in the narrow band-like shear zone.
    3) As far as the process of material fracture and the generation of machined surface are not precisely analyzed, cutting mechanism are not fully solved with pure-theoretical method.

    The wringing force is a very important characteristic of the block gauges, but so far there have been few reports that give qualitative explanation on the cause of the wringing phenomenon. This study aims at making a theoretical analysis of the wringing phenomenon and substantiat-ing it by experimentation. In this study it is also intended to clearly define cohesive force, tangential resisting force, wringing torque and bending moment that are considered related to the wringing. The present report presents an analysis on the cohesive force and the following conclusions were drawn:
    (1) The tensile strength which has heretofore been given a rather vague definition should be divided into cohesive force and tensile strength.
    (2) The cohesive force can be considered to develop from the surface tension of oil existing between the wringing surfaces.
    (3) The cohesive force is noted in vacuum.
    (4) The contact angle in the practical wringing conditions is some 85 degrees.

    The best overlap ratio giving the minimum transfer time is calculated for U-type motion and others. In case of U-type, the 'one-half overlap method' gives a practical solution as well as J-type reported in Part 1.

    It was revealed in the previous paper that the performances of IF gears are superior to those of several kinds of conventional watch gears.
    Thereupon it has been tried to apply IF gears to a watch, and the variation rate of torque ratio of both IF gears and the conventional watch gears which were designed for the same watch under the same conditions has been measured.
    The results are as follows.
    1) The variation rate of torque ratio of IF gears is about 40% less than that of the conventional watch gears.
    2) The uniformity of the variation rate of IF gears is better than that of the conventional watch gears.

    In the first report, the phenomenon of interference between swell out residual was mentioned with cutting edge of conical shape. However, in the actual grinding process, the flattened cutting edge plays a great part.
    Then, in this paper, substituting flattened edge for the frustum of a cone, the behavior and interfered phenomenon of swell out residual are described.
    As a result, it was found that the rate of swell out residual increased rapidly when the shape factor L/D, which was decided from diameter of the bottom of frustum L and the depth of cut D, got some proper value (critical value of shape factor). This might be closely related to the fraction area of the flank wear of abrasive grain concerning about cutting edge life, and this critical value was larger for harder materials.
    The interfering behavior of material, which is caused by two grooves being approached, was affected by the value of shape factor, but the position of interfered highest tip and the positions where the interference begins and the prominence is gone to be interfered, could obtained geometrically by the result with single abrasive grain.

    The oblique indentation test onto work-hardened copper specimens using a wedge-shaped rigid body having an apex angle of 130° is carried out. When the maximum surface roughness of the rigid body is about 12 μ and an angle of incidence is 87 degree, the burrtype piling occurs in contrast to the gentle piling for the surface roughness of 0.2 μ or a smaller angle of incidence of a larger appex angle of the wedge. The tangential unit load of indentation becomes remarkably low. The above-mentioned phenomena are also well simulated by a modification of minimum energy model which has been described in the previous papers.
