    This paper presents the results of research on the influence of radial expansion on the final dimensions of the workpiece when it is heated by a moving line heat source and is machined at elevated temperatures. Equations are developed for temperature distributions and radial expansions of the workpieces. Numerical calculations were conducted on the equations. Also, experiments were conducted on a lathe with a gas heating equipment.
    The results indicate that the shape of the cylindrical workpiece which is hot-machined with a moving line heat source is not a perfect cylinder, and the diameter of the workpiece at the start of cut is a maximum and a minimum diameter appears at the end of cut.

    The behavior of the wringing surfaces of block gauges when wrung together has not been clarified quantitatively so far.
    Thus, the relationship between the wringing force and the amount of contraction is obtained by measuring the amount of contraction occurring when an external force is applied to the block gauges which are thoroughly wrung together and those which are not. Also the amount of elastic deformation developing on the contact section when the block gauges are wrung together is obtained by measuring the configurations of the wringing surfaces. Based on these, an analysis is made on the behavior of the wringing surfaces of the block gauges.
    1. When a load is applied to the wrung block gauges and a solid block gauge of the same size, no difference is seen in the amount of contraction between the two, but the amount of contraction on the block gauges which are not thoroughly wrung together is larger than that on the block gauges which are thoroughly wrung together.
    2. On the wringing surfaces of the block gauges when wrung together, the raised section and the recessed section of the surfaces are brought into contact with each other and this contact section undergoes an elastic deformation as it is pressed by the force equivalent to that required for separating the wringing surfaces. And the amount of this deformation roughly concurs with the Hertz's theory of elastic deformation.

    The paper describes an automatic selection of cutting conditions for minimum cost per machined piece by using Tagawa's method and digital computer.
    A problem of rough turning operation, in which a given depth of surface-layer of a bar is machined out, is taken as an example. Cutting speed, feed, depth of cut and flank-wear for tool life are optimized simultaneously as a set of cutting conditions under constraints of permissible cutting area, chatter, cutting temperature, surface-finish and some shop-conditions.
    The computer results obtained appear to be in good agreement with practical cutting conditions for this operation, despite the assumptions made and the constants in set-up taken rather arbitralily due to lack of concrete infomations.

    以上の結果をまとめると次のようになる.
    (1) 焼結アルミナは焼結方法, 粒径のいかんにかかわらずくり返し衝撃によってその疲れ強さを著しく低下する.すなわち, 105cyclesにおいて, もとの強さの40~50%となる.
    (2) くり返し衝撃の場合にとくに疲れ強さの低下が顕著であるのは, 応力の作用速度が大であることに基づくHertz応力とか衝撃応力の増大とそのくり返しに基因しているとみられる.
    (3) セラミック工具がとくに衝撃作用を受けるときに破損しやすいのは, 機械的くり返し衝撃に基づく疲れによるものと解釈される.

    In this report the effects of some inhibitors on the machining characteristics of an electrolyte of sodium chloride solution in electrochemical machining were examined experimentally for machining carbon steel and austenitic stainless steel by direct current or single-phase half-wave rectified current. The machining characteristics of an electrolyte was evaluated from the roughness of the machined surface. The results are as follows.
    (1) Addition of sodium hydroxide as an inhibitor lowers the machining characteristics of sodium chloride in machining any of both materials by any wave form of current, when the inhibitive action is expected.
    (2) In machining carbon steel by direct current or single-phase half-wave rectified current, addition of potassium nitrite or sodium nitrite lowers the machining characteristics when the corrosive characteristic of sodium chloride solution is improved. But it has no effect on the machining characteristics for machining austenitic stainless steel by the single-phase halfwave rectified current.

    Meshing theory of the ordinary gears is based on the condition of constant angular velocity ratio. But it is more important for watches and clocks to get gears of constant torque ratio. Because in order to keep the period of oscillation of pendulums or balance wheels constant, it is preferable to give a constant torque to the axle of the escape-wheel.
    Unfortunately when a pair of the ordinary gears are in mesh, the transmission torque varies on account of the frictional force between the teeth. From this point of view, the gears of constant torque ratio were investigated.
    In this paper, the equations of intermeshing of tooth profiles of these gears are introduced with the tangential polar coordinates and some tooth profiles of constant torque ratio are derived using these equations. The results are proved to be reliable by experiments. And the tooth profiles of the racks which are used to generate the gear teeth, are also given.
