The machining accuracy of the grinding machine is governed by the relative displacement of the grinding wheel spindle and the work, but said displacement is greatly affected by the rigidity of the grinding wheel spindle. In consideration thereof, the authors have devised a special apparatus, with which they have succeeded in their pursuit on the movements of spindle center and, further, have found, through experiments, the effects of the speed of feed and rigidity of the quill-type spindle relationship on machining accuracy.
1. The swing of an idling grinding wheel spindle center and its statical swing are about in unison and perform a circular movement, but will not coincide when the accuracy and rigidity of the spindle system decline.
2. When a load is caused by grinding resistance, the amount of swing will decrease, and with the increase of load, the amount of swing will again increase. This trend of increase is governed by the accuracy and rigidity of the spindle system.
3. The surface roughness, cylindrical error, and the out-of-roundness of the work is proportionally related with the feed speed of the main spindle and is also exceptionally greatly governed by the rigidity of the grinding wheel spindle.
4. There is a tendency of the deviation of the grinding resistance, occurring during one rotation of the work, being great when the rigidity of the grinding wheel spindle is low.
