Effect of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) on the electrogenic Na-pump of bullfrog visceral nerve fibres was studied, by testing the effect of this drug on the K-activated hyperpolarization (KAH) and K-induced depolarization of these nerve fibres. The log dose-response relation between K concentrations and net KAHs was shifted to left in parallel in the presence of ATP (0.1 mM); Lineweaver-Burk plots showed that the maximum response remained unchanged while apparent dissociation constant (Km) decreased to 0.8 from 1.3 mM (control) in the presence of ATP. The mechanism underlying such an action of ATP was discussed, and it was suggested that the rate of electrogenic Na-pump was increased by the effect of extracellularly applied ATP.

The endotheliums proliferated most remarkably with platelet concentrated plasma (PCP) reinjected in the blind tubes of rabbits' arteries and completely covered just around the surface of the platelet fibrin mass. But they did'nt react so remarkably with fibrin or red blood cells as PCP and in some cases of the latters the reactive proliferation of endotheliums remained to be the minimum or even could be hardly found. The cultured endotheliums also grew and rose up to wrap the small fragments of platelet fibrin from a layer of the cultured endothelial sheet on the bottom. Their nucli were large and hyperchromatic and it looked like tufting or budding architecture seen in an intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia. These findings show that rapid proliferation and covering of endothelium around the platelet fibrin flagments is important as well as infiltrative proliferation of the smooth muscle cells from a inner layer of media in intimal thickening.

In previous study, various stainings of experimentally produced myocardial infarction were examined and considered about their specificity, reliability and practical use. HBFP and PTAH staining methods were useful to detect the early myocardial infarction. In this report, these two staining methods were examined about the usefulness for human autopsy cases. In nine fresh myocardial infarction, six of them showed the regional similarity in PTAH and HBFP positive areas, the similarity in remainders were partially. In the earlier lesion, HBFP method stained stronger than PTAH. As lesion becomes older, PTAH positive area become to be stronger. In operation materials positive findings were variable. In control, false positive areas were found at intermediate zone. These findings were mostly due to unskillfull decolorization technique. From the results of our study, it was thought that the early myocardial infarction could be successfully diagnosed by the combination of HBFP and PTAH staining methods.

The effect of the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH, protirelin), one of the hypothalamic releasing hormones, on body temperature was investigated in the rat. TRH tartrate dissolved in saline, in doses of 1, 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg, was injected intraperitoneally to male Wistar rats weighing 200-250 g. The rectal temperature was measured with the electronic thermister inserted into 5 cm inner from the anus. TRH tartrate caused a temporary rise in body temperature dose-dependently. The degree of the rise in body temperature ranged from 0.5°C to 1.5°C as a mean and the hyperthermia appeared early and lasted for 80 min after the peptide administration. The thyroidectomized rats injected 20 mg/kg of TRH which induced a significant hyperthermia in the sham-operated animals, failed to show a rise in body temperature. The present results suggest that a release of thyroid hormone might participate in the hyperthermic action of TRH.

Novel heat-evolving pads were prepared and applied to the back of rabbits to measure the temperatures of the skin surface, subcutaneous tissue (about 3 mm in depth), muscle (about 8 mm in depth) under the applied area and the rectum. The application of the pad caused an increased in the skin surface temperature, which was accompanied with an increase in the subcutaneous and muscular temperature. When the pads immediately after initiation of heat evolution were applied, the skin surface, subcutaneous tissue and muscle reached the respective plateau temperatures of about 43, , 42 and 41°C in 40 minutes. These temperatures were maintained for 1.5 to 2.0 hours. When the pads 30 minutes after initiation of heat evolution were applied, the skin surface, subcutaneous and muscular temperatures were increased to the respective plateau temperatures only in 20 minutes.

The follow-up results for an average of 7.9 years were analyzed on 86 hips in 82 patients with intracapsular fracture of the femoral neck treated by internal fixation. The functional and X-ray results were not significantly different between the two groups of under and over 60 years of age. The internal fixation was thought to be a method of choice for intracapsular fracture of the femoral neck, even in the aged.

Fifty eight total replacement operations were carried out on the hips with deficient acetabulum. The acetabulum was reconstructed by bone grafting. The active exercise was started one week after the operation and the partial weight bearing was allowed 3 to 4 weeks. Remodelling of the reconstructed acetabulum was completed in one and a half years after operation, and the stable fixation of the prosthetic socket was secured without one loosening in all cases.

The transplantation of experimental ovarian tumors induced by chemical carcinogenetic materials to rats and their sensitivity to carcinostatics were discussed.Among the rats of the same series to which tumors were tried to transplant subcutaneously, sarcoma was successfully transplanted in 2 lineages; one is in the 52nd generation and another is in the 44th generation at present. The tumors could be transplanted to both male rats and female rats of the same series, but the transplantation rate was different in early generations. Tumor formation was seen not only by transplanting tumor cells subcutaneously but by injecting them intraperitoneally. The sensitivities of the transplanted tumors to various carcinostatics were tested and Mitomycin C was found to have a surviving effect.

Buccal circulation and its response to adrenaline, noradrenaline, acetylcholine and bradykinin were studied in dogs. Both common carotid arteries were perfused by the blood of the femoral artery. Buccal capillary flow in the buccal mucosa, submucosa and muscle was measured by double thermocouples.Adrenaline and noradrenaline injected into the carotid arteries caused a decrease in the buccal capillary flow and this effect of adrenaline was greater than that of noradrenaline. Adrenaline tended to cause greater reduction than noradrenaline. The decrease induced by adrenaline was more conspicuous in the buccal mucosa and submucosa, which was due to a higher sensitivity of resistance vessels in the mucosa and submucosa to adrenaline. Adrenaline reversal was observed by pretreatment with phenoxybenzamine in the buccal muscle, but not in the mucosa and submucosa.Acetylcholine caused biphasic changes, i. e., an initial increase and a delayed decrease in blood flow. The initial increase was slight in the buccal muscle, but great in the mucosa and submucosa. This effect was prevented by atropine, and also the increase in the mucosa was inhibited by phenoxybenzamine and chlorpromazine. The delayed decrease in buccal tissues induced by acetylcholine was also prevented by phenoxybenzamine, chlorpromazine and pyridinol carbamate. The effect of bradykinin on buccal circulation and its prophylactic effect were quite similar to those observed with acetylcholine. From the foregoing, our data suggests that acetylcholine causes a secondary liberation of a vasoactive kinin-like substance which may regulate the buccal capillary flow.

During the one year period from 1976 to 1977, we observed five cases of pineal region tumor diagnosed by means of characteristic clinical symptoms and CT scan findings. Of that number, one was diagnosed as suprasellar germinoma. On four of the cases, we did V-P shunts and we gave irradiation to all five. During the period of treatment, we studied the relationship among the course of treatment, the clinical symtoms and the CT scan findings.1. Very early in the course of treatment, we can discern the radiation sensitivity of the tumor by means of the decrease in tumor size and the degree of contrast enhancement of the tumor on the CT scan.2. We believe the decrease in the size of the tumor occurs before any improvements of clinical symptoms. Even though the tumor image has disappeared on the CT scan, there are some cases where the clinical symptoms still remain.3. After the V-P shunt operation, the ventricular system becomes markedly small in three of four cases and showed a tendency to enlarge slightly during the course of irradiation therapy. These findings appear to be independent of clinical status.

Schlemm's canal (Sinus venous sclerae) of human fetuses and postnatal monkeys (Macaca fuscata) were observed with the light and electron microscope.Between the 21st and 24th week of gestation of the fetuses, many branches of Schlemm's vascular plexus at the sclerocorneal junction, which is immatured form of Schlemm's canal, were connected to each other by young fibroblasts invading from the surrounding connective tissue. Our observations indicate that the main pathway of aqueous humor across endothelium of the canal is converted from “intercellular” into “intracellular” (transported by vacuoles and pores) in these stages. In the postnatal monkeys, large vacuoles were observed in the differentiating endothelium at the inner wall of the canal. Our electron micrographs indicate that these vacuoles are formed by a successive fusion of adjacent pinocytotic vesicles in the endothelial cells and take an important role for aqueous humor transport.

The formaldehyde-induced fluorescence microscopy and microfluorimetry were applied to bullfrog sympathetic ganglia in order to examine the effect of reserpine on the cellular catecholamines in two types of cells [ganglion cells and small intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells]. The skin color of the bullfrog changed into dark from green and this change was observed on the second day after administration of reserpine. Reserpine-induced catecholamine fluorescence reduction was obtained dose-dependently in bullfrog sympathetic ganglion cells. But, a marked changes in the fluorescence intensity of SIF cells could not be observed.
