An eccrine poro-duct carcinoma which had occurred on the left upper leg and metastasized to the left inguinal region of a 58-year-old woman was compared histologically with a case of eccrine porocarcinoma which had occurred on the scalp of a 44-year-old woman.

In a 39-year-old man there was an elevated, smooth-surfaced tumor with a central ulcer measuring 2.6×2.2cm on his upper lip. Histologically, the tumor mass was composed of epidermoid cells predominating, mucous secreting and intermediate cells. Mucous secreting cells formed a cystic structure and microcysts. The tumor mass composed of intermediate cells invading the muscular layer and vascular channels. The tumor was widely excised, with a plastic repair of the defect. There is no evidence of a recurrence or metastases 4.5 years later.

A case of calcifying epithelioma with marked ossification is reported. A 13-year-old boy had a subcutaneous nodule on the region of his right temple. The nodule was hard and 2.1×2.1cm in size. Twenty-seven cases of calcifying epithelioma with ossification reported in Japan are reviewed.

Three patients with trichilemml cyst with nodules on the scalp and left cervical region and left cheek, were treated. In the 36 studied statistically, ages ranged from 19 to 80 years and the lesions were mainly located on the scalp. Difference in distribution between the sexes was not seen. Multiple occurrences were noted in only three Japanese. About seventy percent of occurrences are in Europeans and North Americans. Cysts in the Japanese were more likely to be calcified. Malignant change occurred in one Japanese patient.

We treated a 53-year-old man with trichilemmal carcinoma in the outer aspect of the left thigh and with a regional lymph node metastasis. Clinically the primary lesion was suspected to be a Bowen’s carcinoma. Histological appearance was similar to follicular Bowen’s disease at the peripheral plaque lesion and represented trichilemmal carcinoma in the central tumor. Histological characteristics of lymph node metastasis were similar to findings in the primary lesion. Up to February 1985, 27 cases of trichilemmal carcinoma were reported in Japan. These cases could be divided into preinvasive phase (16 cases) and invasive phase (11 cases). A review was made of those cases, with respect to clinical and histological characteristics of trichilemmal carcinoma, in both phases.

Four cases of piezogenic pedal papules were reported. The first was a 35-year-old man. Several painful lesions developed on the medial and lateral aspects of his feet and were more remarkable when he gained weight. The second and third cases were a 35-year-old man and a 3-year-old girl, a father and daughter. The third was the youngest case reported until now. The lesions in the fourth were noted accidentally, biopsy was performed, but no particular pathological changes were evident. The clinical and pathological appearances of piezogenic pedal papules were discussed.

In a 45-year-old woman, lupus erythematosus profundus on the lips, buttocks and thighs and in some areas discoid lupus erythematosus lesions were present. The serology revealed a positive, antinuclear antibody (ANA) and immuno-complex. In addition, direct immunofluorescence showed deposits of immuno-globulin and complement at the dermal-epidermal junction and within the vessel walls.

Sixty-Seven basaliomas excised from 65 patients were studied clinically and dermatohistopathologically. The sections were stained using Luna’s technique to clarify its stromal behavior. As a result, sex-ratio was 1.2 (male): 1.0 (female). Patients over 50 accounted for 80%. The face, especially nasolabial region, was the most common site involved. Clinically, the nodulo-ulcerative type was seen in 61.2%, the superficial type 14.9%, and so on, respectively. Histopathologicatly, the solid type was seen in 35.7%, superficial type 17.9%, and adenoid type 13.4%. Newly developed elastic fibers around the epithelial tissues were present in fifteen (23%). The presence of new elastic fibers seems to be an important factor in the development of basalioma.

  • The Lanolin Patch Test Research Group
    1985Volume 47Issue 5 Pages 864-873

Lanolin and its derivatives (24 test samples) were patched for 48 hours on the backs of 430 subjects including patients with cosmetic dermatitis, facial melanosis, a history of cosmetic dermatitis or other types of eczema and dermatitis, non-eczematous dermatosis, and on healthy volunteers. Although refined lanolin fatty acid (30%) produced the most frequent positive reactions, these reactions were found to result from irritant reactions to low molecular lanolin fatty acids. Moderately strong positive reactions which are thought to be allergic reactions were observed to lanolin alcohol (30%) in 2.3%, to reduced lanolin (30%) in 1.3%, to lanosterol (10%) in 1.3%, to polyoxyethylene lanolin alcohol (30%) in 0.9%, to acetylated lanolin alcohol (30%) in 0.8% and to refined lanolin (30%) in 0.5%. In 7 with refined lanolin produced postive reactions 72 hours after application, 5 had positive reactions to lanolin alcohol (30%), 1 to lanosterol (10%), 1 to polyoxyethylene lanolin alcohol (30%), 1 to acetylated lanolin (30%), 1 to polar lanolin (as is), and 1 to isopropyl lanolin fatty acid esters (30%). From these patch test results, lanolin alcohol was thought to be most often responsible for allergic reactions to lanolin. It was also determined that absorption refined lanolin, in which free lanolin alcohol and lanolin wax had been removed, was safer than refined lanolin or partly refined lanolin.
