Numerous experiments and researches have been made to evaluate roughness or finish of metallic surfaces by measuring the electrical contact resistance or electric potential, but none of them is considered to be useful to industrial purposes.
By applying a new method to measure the electric resistance of the finished surfaces, the author found that both the irregularities and outside layers of them can be detected, so that the measured values may make it possible to compare the finished metallic surfaces not only quantitatively, but also quantitatively, and that the measuring instrument is valuable enough for industrial uses.
The paper describes the principle, and analysis of the values obtained by experiments.
