    As the factors which make difference between theoretical tightness of fit and actual one, measuring error, out of roundness, out of cylinderness and roughness of fitting surface, etc. are presumed.
    In this report, how contact pressure, tightness, ratio of contact, etc. are effected by out of roundness of circular profiles of shaft and ring as a pair is studied.
    In order to express skewness of circular profiles of the parts, the authors use radial length of "overlap" of both skew circle with same mean circles.
    As the results of experiments, the authors find the followings.
    1. Actual tightening pressure is generally higher than theoretical one. And twisting resistance varies according to change of setting angle phase between both parts, but it is equal to the product of thrusting resistance in the correspondent position and radius of the shaft.
    These facts show that skewness of both circular profiles plays important role in fitting.
    Skew profile of the shaft comes out to external profile of the ring according to thickness of the ring and interference.
    In case that fitting is repeated, interference and out of roundness of the ring gradually Teduce and settle to some amounts.
    Then the correlations of some degree are found among length of "overlap", thrusting resistance and ratio of contact.
    As the ratio of contact is unexpectedly small, wearing, stick slip may easily be caused at the contacting points. Therefore attention must be given to lubrication of the fitting surface.

    As the factors which make difference between theoretical tightness of fit and actual one, the authors study effect of out of cylinderness of axial profiles of shaft and ring on tightness, ratio of contact, etc. in this report.
    In order to express skewness of cylinder of the parts, they use radial length of "overlap" of both skew cylinders with same mean cylinder.
    As the results of experiments, we have found the followings:
    1. Actual tightness varies according to difference of "overlap" even if they have equal mean interference.
    2. Even if fitting surface is locally missed, tightness does not become so loose.
    3. In case that both roundness and cylinderness of each part are wrong, tightness becomes easily loose by repeating disassembling and assembling, compared to the case that only cylinderness is wrong.
    4. As ratio of contact is unexpectedly small, wearing, stick slip may be easily caused at the contacting points.
    Therefore attention must be given to lubrication of fitting surface.

    A brief description is given of a gauge interferometer which measures lengths of up to 1 m in terms of wavelength of light.
    Isotopic light sources containing mercury 198 and Krypton 86 as well as natural cadmium, are used in the interferometer. To measure the refractive index of air by interferometry, a vacuum chamber is set in the optical system with the block gauge to be measured. The main parts of the interferometer is set in constant temperature apparatus. The accuracy of this gauge interferom eter is found to be 0.02O.03 μ in 1 m length.

    Practically, the strength of a drill is an important problem, and a few stress analyses by the methods of the simulation were performed. In the results the solutions were expressed as the relation between the torsional stress function or the torsional stresses and the specific torsional angle. For the comparison of the strength of the various drill sections, it is satisfactory to obtain the relation between the stresses and the torsional angle, but in order to obtain the strength for the given torque, it is necessary to know the relation between the torsional stresses and the torque.
    For this purpose, as we must integrate and differentiate the torsional function numerically, it is necessary to obtain the stress function in sufficient significant figures and the numerical method is suitable.
    In the present report, we show the results of the numerical stress analyses of the drill by means of the difference method, and provide a datum for the relation between the torque and the stresses.

    The character of the impact sound, one of the main causes of machinery noise, is examined by using two steel balls colliding with each other.
    First, the mechanism of the production of impulsive sounds of two steel balls collision is studied theoretically and also it is ascertained experimentally by using steel balls of various diameters which are used for ball bearings.
    According to H. Hertz theory, the contact time is proportional to the (-1/5) power of relative collision velocity. Therefore, the average acceleration of each sphere becomes proportional to the (6/5) power of the collision velocity. On the other hand, the sound pressure at a point of space is proportional to the acceleration of the moving surface of sound source. Hence, the maximum value of sound pulse becomes proportional to the (6/5) power of the collision velocity.
    The free vibration of the steel ball excited by the collision is studied by using a small transducer of piezoelectric material attached to one of the two balls, and the period of this vibration is found to be so short that the intensity of the sound produced by the free vibration becomes small to be negligible compared with that of the impact sound.
    The dynamical characteristics of the microphones used for catching the sound pulses are examined fully to obtain the correct analysis of the records of the sound pulses obtained by the microphones.
    Lastly, the impact sound character of the oblique collision of steel balls is studied, and it is found that the effect of the parallel component of the velocity to the center line becomes large on the impact sound and that of the right angle component becomes small to be neglected respectively.
