    In this paper, the relations among the composition of grinding wheel, elastic modulus and bending strength are studied.
    The results obtained are as follows :
    (1) In case of the composition being constant, the elastic modulus is not influenced by the grain size of the grinding wheel, on the other hand the bending strength is affected by it.
    (2) Matsuno's equation can be applied to the relation between the composition of the grinding wheel and the elastic modulus.
    (3) The relation between the composition of the grinding wheel and the bending strength is obtained experimentally.
    (4) If the ratio of the percentage of bond to grain is constant, the bending strength as well as the elastic modulus have apporoximately the relation of exponential function with the porosity of the grinding wheel.
    (5) The relation between the elastic modulus and the bending strength is obtained aperoximately.
    (6) It is possible to assume the bending strength from the elastic modulus nondestructively.

    The residual stress of the work roll materials which arise in cylindcrical Plunge grinding process is discussed in this paper. Experimental study discribes on the investigation as to the influence of the dressing and grinding conditions; dressing speed, dressing depth of cut, peripheral speed of the work, infeed speed of grinding wheel and the coolants. The results are summarized as follows :
    1) Increasing the dressing speed, dressing depth of cut, peripheral speed of the work and the compresive residual stress on machined surface decreased gradually. And the depth of its distribution in layer decreased.
    2) In the coolant of 5% sodium nitrite water or emulsion type, the latter is higher valus than the former in the compresive residual stress on machined surface and the depth of its distribution in layer.
    (3) The cause of the change of residual stress in layer is due to thermal residual stress as a function of grinding temperature.

    This paper presents both the outlines of experimental equipments which were specially made for the turning in vacuum and the results of some experiments in machining of the carbon steel and the titanium under various grades of vacuum.
    It is found that the state of chip formation becomes unfavorable with the intensing of the vacuum, and this phenomenon would be attributed to the imperfect formation of the mono-molecular adsorption layer of the air at the tool-chip inter face.
    Moreover, considering the results of some experiments of oxygen jet machining, it is able to classify the state of chip formation into following three types according to the state of the atmosphere; (1) the cutting process with the metallic contact between the tool and the chip (2) the cutting process with the formation of the mono-molecular adsorption layer of the air at the tool-chip inter face (3) the cutting process with the formation of the oxides at the tool-chip inter face. The type 1 is observed under high grade of the vacuum and the type 3 is attained only by the supply of the oxygen jet.

    In order to study the mechanics of machining chatter, an investigation into the dynamics of the metal cutting process has been carried out using experimental approaches. A new experimental method is proposed to obtain the dynamic stiffness of metal cutting process without measuring the dynamic cutting force. In the method, the tool is attached to a cantilevertype structure and is excited sinusoidally with a small electrodynamic exciter in the direction of the principal mode of the structure, while both the dynamic force applied to the tool and the displacement of the tool are measured simultaneously. The dynamic stiffness of metal cutting process is given as the vectorial difference between the dynamic stiffness of the structure when in cutting and that when in not cutting. Dynamic cutting stiffness is shown in this paper as experimentally obtained when the tool is excited in the normal direction to the cut surface. The experimental results are shown to agree with the theoretical model of the so-called “penetration effect” proposed by Das and Tobias. Effects of depth of cut, feed rate, wave length of chatter marks and built-up edge formation on the onset of the regenerative chatter are also investigated in this paper.

    Recently, high-speed production grinding has been used as one of economical methods of productions. In this working, as the circumferential velocity of grinding wheel will reach 5400 m/min, it is required to investigate the bursting strength of highspeed rotating wheels.
    In this paper, the effects of the clamping force transmitted from flange and the centrifugal force will be analyzed by applying the three-dimensional elastic theory on the finite hollow cylinders. On the other hand, the effects of the grinding force will be discussed by using the finite element method to analyse the axi-symmetrical elastic body under un-symmetrical load systems.
    From the theoretical and the numerical analyses, it becomes obvious that the most im-portant stress is the circumferential stress σθ caused by the centrifugal force, and the clamping and the grinding forces disturb this stress.

    An analytical method applying a chance-constrained programming concept is proposed to determine the optimum cutting conditions considering the probabilistic nature of the evaluation function and constraints. The proposed analytical method is illustrated through an application to an example. It is shown that the optimum cutting conditions are significantly affected by the probabilistic nature of coefficients in the constraints. The optimum feed for the minimum production cost becomes smaller as the probability level for the constraints becomes higher, while the optimum cutting speed does not change significantly in the example considered. The effect of the uncertainty of the predicted tool life in the production cost function on the optimum cutting conditions is also considered.

    The runout of gear teeth space is a conversion of differences in the cumulative pitch errors on the two facing flanks into the radial direction of the gear, and the pitch error of gear teeth space is equal to the average value of the cumulative pitch errors on the two facing flanks.
    In this paper the two electric detectors of the two flank pitch measuring apparatus, described in the previous paper, are set in such a position that they detect two flank cumulative pitch errors simulteneously. And the wire strain gauge circuit of the detector is reconstituted so as to record a sum or a difference of the two flank cumulative pitch errors.
    In such a way, the measurement of spur gear teeth space runout and pitch by automatic recording have been investigated, based on the measuring principles different from the prevalent methods. And it is shown that this measuring methods are accurate enough for practical use by comparing the results of this methods with those of the prevalent methods.

    This paper deals with fundamentals of the function of geometrical shapes. Geometrical shapes exerts its function when it interacts with other shapes in proper way. Functions of mechanism, for example, are generated by geometrical shapes of machine elements and their interaction. Systematic approach to such problem, however, has been little done in spite of its importance. In the present paper, affinity between shapes which is one of the fundamental properities to exert the functions is studied. Contact, relative motion and fixing which appear sequentially in the process of accession of two separate shapes is analysed in probabilistic way. The probability of occurrence of each stable state offers a measure of affinity between these two shapes, which is called static affinity. On the other hand, when some exciting force is applied to shapes the transience between fixing states occurs, the process of which is described as a stochastic process. It is revealed that the process is a Markovian process and its stochastic matrix can be a measure of dynamic affinity between two shapes. Such process is analogous to the reaction between chemical substance, hence the affinity between shapes to free energy of chemical reaction. Some discussion is given to the possibility of application of such parameter as affinity to the design of machine parts to improve the assembling process of them.
