We considered the thoracic scoliosis was not only the spinal deformity but also the deformity of the thorax. In this paper, we studied the function and role of ribs in the thoracic scoliosis by measuring the rib vertebral angle.
Method of measurement was described in this paper. Difference of the rib vertebral angle in the apex (R. V. A. D.), difference of the rib vertebral angle around the apex (tR. V. A. D) was used to review the curve types, degree of the curves, deformity in the sagittal plane and course of the curves.
Result: R. V. A. D in the group above 20 degrees differ from that below 20 degrees, this fact imply the necessity of positive brace treatment above 20 degrees. Value of
tR. V. A. D was increased along with increasing of the curve angle. Value of tR. V. A. D was more increased in cases with not kyphotic or lordotic in the sagittal plane than kyphotic one. In follow up cases, value of tR. V. A. D was more increased in progressed cases than improved and non changed cases.
We proposed that when we treat scoliosis in thoracic region, we should investigate the balance between ribs and vertebrae.
