Sands were served as media for growth of soybeans and those previously germinated in plant- food- free sand. It was shown that calcium supply must first meet the requirement of early stage of the growth and that a certain amount of this element served efficiently to supply phosphoric acid present in small quantities. The important role of phosphoric acid was considered for the mechanism of nitrogen fixation, as has been seen little effect on soybean plants receiving combined nitrogen. Increasing calcium supply was the cause of high calcium- phosphoric acid relation in nodules, while increasing phorphoric acid was not a low relation. For securing normal development of nodules, it was suggestible to use phorphoric acid fertilizers not later than two weeks after sowing, since the infection of appropriate bacteria may take place under normal condition of soybeans as early as 14 days.

The soil cohesion is a most important mechanical property as regard to the ploughing. In this report, the relations between the cohesions and the water contents are stated and discussed. The measurements were conducted according to the methods of Atterberg with some modifications, and, the cohesion of hard block ("Festigkeit") and the cohesion of granular block ("Bindigkeit") were determined. The relations between the cohesions and the water contents in some of our soils are examined and the features of the cohesion curves are explained from a pure physical point of view. The well-known "break" of cohesion curves proposed by Alterberg was carefully reexamined with some heavy clays and the possibility of existense of the "break" is ascertained and discussed in the light of modern theories of capillary forces in soils, developed by W. B, Haines, R. A. Fisher, and Ch. Terzaghi.

Kanagawa prefecture is one of the chief districts of citrus production in Japan. A study was made with the soil of citrus garden in this prefecture and obtained analytical data with regard to their physical and chemical properties. The results are summarized as follows : 1. From the results of mechanical analysis, soils were mostly classified into loam and clay loam. 2. SiO_2-Al_2O_3 ratio of clay fraction of soils was generally low in surface soil, i.e., 1.30〜2.19. The ratio showed minimum in middle horizon and increased in deeper horizon. 3.Humus and nitrogen contents were commonly high in surface soil and decreased with depth. C : N ratio was about 10 in surface soil and much higher in deeper horizon. Available phosphoric acid was very low even in surface soil while available potash was generally high throughout horizons. These contents in surface soils are given in the following table. [table] 4. pH value of soil was 5〜7. Exchangeable base was sometimes rather sufficient and the average of surface soil was Ca 12.28,Mg 4.14,K 0.78,Na 0.54 m.e./100g. The most part of bases was Ca in surface soil but in deeper horizon Mg took the place of Ca. Saturation degree of surface soil was very low and increased with depth.
