To know how the effects would differ of superphosphate dressing among the varieties of paddy rice, pot experiments for a year and field experiments for 4 years were carried out. The effects on the growth, on the yield, on the amounts and the efficiencies of N_2 and P_2O_5 absorbed, and on the contents of both gredients in the straws and grains were discussed. It was found that the overdressing of superphosphate were somewhat detrimental to the earlier growth of the plant and depressed the yield of both straws and grains. The amount of the phosphate applied, temperature throughout the period of the growth and the characteristics of the variety were found to have great significances as the factors that rule the efficiency, and therefore, the limit of overdressing of the phosphate.

1. The present authors made several experiments on the determination of alumina in small quantity and found that aluminon method by WINTER etc. is the best and applicable to soil extract. 2. It was found by the above method that the tea garden soil in Uji-district contains remarkable water soluble alumina and that it has an intimate relation with pH of the extract. When the pH of the extract is smaller than 3.5,it is remarkable but with the increase of the pH, it decreases rapidly and is nearly zero or trace at pH 4.9 or more. In average, the pH of Uji-soil is 3.5 to 4.5 and the quantity of soluble alumina is 1 to 4. p. p. m. 3. It was also determined that pH is smaller in surface soil than in subsoil and that ruined tea garden soil has smaller pH than normal. The quantity of water soluble alumina in the soil shows a reverse relation with its PH value.

In this paper the authors investigated the manurial value of activated sludge as nitrogenous fertilizer, which was produced by the sewage purification plant at Atsuta, Nagoya City, by pot culture experiments and laboratory nitrification and ammonification tests in soils under dry farm and water-logged conditions. The results may be summarized as follows : 1. The results of the nitrification and ammonification tests showed that, a portion of nitrogen in activated sludge converted rapidly into nitrate and ammonia in the early stage of incubation, but the rest of it showed a slow production of nitrate and ammonia ; the rate of nitrification and ammonification of activated sludge was inferior to that of fish guano and soybean cake at any stage of the experiment lasted 100 days. 2. The pot experiments were carried out in two cases (a) with paddy rice and barley of long period of growth (4 or 6 months)and (b) with komatsuna (Brassica chinencea, L.) of rather short period of growth (about 52 days). In the case of (a) the activated sludge as a source of nitrogen was observed to be less effective than sulfate of ammonia, fish guano and soybean cake, while in the case of (b) it was slightly inferior to sulfate of ammonia, and approximately equal to fish guano and soybean cake. These results of the pot experiments showed a fairly close agreement with that of aforementioned laboratory measurements on nitrate and ammonia accumulation.

Siono-Misaki and Toi-Misaki are the capes which strectch out on the Pacific Coast of south-western Japan. 1. The climatic condition is as follows. [table]2. Fine soil below 2 mm in diameter was treated with hot conc. HCl and analysed as usual^<(1)>. From the analytical data some Molecular ratios are given as in the following table.[table]3.Clay fractions below 0.001 mm in diameter for Siono-Misaki Soils, and below 0.002 mm for Toi-Misaki Soils were separated by settling Method and analysed by using HARDY'S Tri-acid Mixture and hot conc. HCl. From the analytical results SiO_2/Al_2O_3 and SiO_2/R_2O_3 are calculated, [table]4. Considering the above tables, it is observed that the Soil formation of Allitic Nature is prevailing in these parts of Japan. (1) Methoden fur die Untersuchung des Bodens. 1932. S. 56.

Paddy rice fields in the district of Kujukuri Chiba Prefecture received severe damage from the recent drought which we had never experienced before. With 95 soils of those fields the Neubauer's method was conducted to ascertain the effect of drought on the availability of Nitrogen in those soils. The effect was observed as follows : The amount of available nitrogen increased 20 % in the soil of water-logged condition through the normal year and decreared 20 % in that of water-logged condition not through the year.

Two kinds of pumices and many sorts of decomposed pumices are found in the west-northern part of Kwanto district. One of the not decomposed pumices is an erupted material from Mt. Asama and the other is from Futatsudake in Mt. Haruna. Many kinds of decomposed pumices, probably from Mt. Asama are found in the vicinity of Mt.Haruna ; and other kinds from Mt.Asama, Mt.Haruna and Mt.Akagi are also found at the foot of Mt. Akagi. Socalled "Kanuma Soil''seems to be an erupted material from Mt.Akagi and "Imaichi Soil" is an eruption from Mt.Nantai. From the mineralogical view point, above pumice-soil seems to be roughly classified as follows;[table]
