Many works have been reported for the application of computer technique to radiation treatment planning in the these one and half decades. And it seems that theoretical back ground and computing procedures for dosage calculation have been almost established. Several kinds of commercial computers which are exclusively used for the advanced treatment planning system including all common modalities are now increasing in the field of radiotherapy, instead of general purpose computers. It is reasonable and effective to apply, modify and expand the avairable software for the calculation of dose distributions of more complex treatment technique than common modalities. In this report, the results of modification and expansion of the available software for the calculation of dose distribution in the selective protection of the eye balls in moving field radiation treatment of the hypophysis were discribed. In this technique, the shadows of two absorbers always include the eye balls of the patient during rotation of the radiation source. However the position of the absorber relative to a effective beam is gradually and continuously changed. Dose calculation was carried out for 270° arc-therapy by superimposing 19 beams at 15 degrees intervals. Dose distributions and the doses at the rotation axis were compared between experiments and calculations. The calculated dose distribution agreed well with measured one at a higher dose region, and the differences at a lower dose region could, not lose the significance of clinical application.

Recently due to their quality duplicating films have been used clinically to a great extent. We need to know the physical characteristics of the duplicating films in order to reproduce the original X-ray photograms faithfully in the process of duplication. As the physical characteristics of the several kinds of the duplicating films, we obtained their density curves, H & D curves, modulation transfer functions (MTF), and Wiener spectrums (W.S.) through experiment and their graininess through the entropy method, and then we compared them. As for the density curve, QD and RX-DUP showed good results, and as for MTF, W.S., and entropy method, RX-DUP showed a good result.

Computed tomography for the head and neck has been well developed in both hardware and software, and now is widely utilized as one of useful diagnostic aids. However, there existed a problem on reproductivity because position of the head and neck varied at each positioning. Therefore, in order to obtain reproductive positioning, we devised a head holding apparatus modified from the cephalostat, which consisted of left and right ear rods, and a bite plate in the mouth. The bite plate covered with modelling compound impression materials, fits the upper and lower dentitions. Reliability of the head holding apparatus was tested using a head phantom and a dry skull. Ranges of differences in repeated positioning ±1 mm. in distance and ±1° in angle. It was proved that the head holding apparatus was useful to obtain reproductive positioning, which made it possible to get CT image with high diagnostic ability.

The uncertainty analysis technique in psychology was apply to a method of radiographic image evaluation with perceptual fluctuation and to a examination of visual evaluation of X-ray grid. A skull phantom was radiographed using four kinds of grids with 30 films each. The total of 120 films were randomly mixed and then assesed by 7 neurosurgeons, 7 radiologic technologists and 7 students in the course of radiologic technology, College of Medical Science, Kumamoto University. The results obtaind were as follows ; 1) The physical characteristics of four kinds of grids agreed with the visual evaluation of skull phantom radiographs by each observer. 2) The fluctuation of visual evaluation by each observer was lower in radiologic technologists than neurosurgeons.

Minimum perceptible density differences ΔD_<min> were calculated for several factors from an empirical formula of vision psychologically determined. These results agreed with experimental results. Psychological gamma δ was defined as the ratio of film-gamma to ΔD_<min>. At the optimum densities δ's take the maximum values. The optimum density-ranges were obtained from the log-exposure-δ relations. If the density range produced by the object-thickness range coincides with the optimum range, perceptible relative change in thickness takes the maximum.
