We examined the relationship between SN ratio of visual threshold value and radiographic image by using various sizes of plastic columns and various speeds of screen/film systems to change the signal value. We tried to get a visual estimation applyjng the 18-AFC (18-alternative forced choice) method using five radiological technologists. On the other side, we got a physical estimation applying the spectral SN ratio composed of NEQ (u) (Number of noise-equivalent quanta (u)) and distributed spectral of the signal. As a result, when we assumed the threshold value of detectability of the 18-AFC method was 50%, we found that SN ratio of the visual threshold value was 3.23. When the speed of the screen/film system increases, the threshold value of the SN ratio decreases. We were able to confirm that the visual characteristics depend on the contrast and spatial frequency of the signal.

A dual-screen/dual-emulsion film combination (Kodak MinR Fast screen/TMG film) that allows for a decrease in patient exposure was evaluated with widely used single-screen/single-emulsion systems (Kodak MinR/OM, Kodak MinR/MinR, and Toshiba MM6/MINC film) in contact to mammography. Clustered microcalcifications randomly superimposed on a breast specimen were detected, and the locations were determined by eight observers. The dual screen-film system provided about a 64% reduction in patient exposure compared with the single-screen/single-emulsion system (MM6/MINC), but it failed to equal the single-system in detection of simulated microcalcifications. Our results suggested that the conventional single-screen/single-emulsion systems showed better detectability of microcalcifications than the dual-screen/dual-emulsion film combinations.

We have classified liver tumors on dynamic MRI by analyzing their enhanced patterns, and examined how useful it is for the differential diagnosis of hepatic tumors. We have analyzed the staining patterns and sequential changes of 211 nodules of 184 cases on MRI with the contrast media Gadopentetate gimegulmin (hereafter Gd-DTPA) inject. By analyzing the staining patterns of tumors on MRI, we found that diseases each have characteristic staining patterns. In conclusion, it can be said that dynamic MRI with Gd-DTPA injected has made more accurate qualitative diagnosis possible and has improved the existential diagnosis of diseases of minimal change, identifying the expanse of leasions and the degree of infiltration into tissues and organs.

Relative speeds, modulation transfer functions (MTFs), and Wiener spectra of old (L type) and new (TO type) screens were compared. The relative speed of TO screens was comparable to those of L screens. TO screens improved the resolution properties slightly. Noise properties of TO type screens were comparable, except for L-660 vs TO-660, to those of L screens. Image quality factor of TO-220 and TO-440 screens showed a slightly improvement over L-220 and L-440 screens.

Radiation dose-effect relationship is reviewed. For conservative treatment of early breast cancer, the necessity of radiation is discussed and surgery using the radiotherapy techniques in our hospital are presented. Our procedures consist of lumpectomy which is removal of 1cm of normal tissue containing the primary breast cancer and complete axillary dissection and postoperative radiotherapy of 46Gy with 9Gy of electron boost. Since November 1987, 61 patients treated using this procedure have shown good local control and satisfactory cosmetic results. We have concluded that the positive aspects of radiotherapy in the management of conservative therapy for early breast cancer are overwhelming.
