We carried out an evaluation of dual energy subtraction images taken using a combination of a condenser-type X-ray apparatus and FCR from both radiographic and clinical viewpoints. Radiographic evaluation : We obtained a good image quality of X-ray picture employing two levels of energy, 120 kV 10 mAs+Cu 1-mm filter and 70 kV 25 mAS with a relatively short exposure time. Clinical evaluation : We obtained a good X-ray picture in which obstructive shadows were fairly well removed, and also a high image quality remained on both chest and larynx X-ray pictures. In the case of chest radiography, with the employment of a cardiac synchronizer, an image with a greater reduction of motional blur artifact was obtained. Futhernore, a good quality image of the larynx was obtained even though there was a difficulty in requiring two kinds of respiratory and phonative X-ray pictures.

We developed a new technique of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for peripheral angiography, which made it possible to take a DSA image of two contiguous fields with a single injection of contrast material. The technique involves combination with step-shift function, which is commonly used in conventional angiography of the abdomen and lower extremities. After DSA images of the first position have been demonstrated well, the table is automatically translated to the second position. A DSA image of the second position can there be obtained by the remising method. With this technique, we were able to reduce the contrast material load and the time taken for the examination

SPECT images, using a brain phantom, of ^<123>I generated from the (p, 2n) or (p, 5n) reaction were compared with each other. Furthermore, imaging with ^<99m>Tc nuclide was also studied. LEHR was the best collimator for LSF using (p, 5n) ^<123>I. On the other hand, the basal ganglia in the brain phantom could be visualized only with an MEHS collimator. ^<99m>Tc at more than 8 mCi was able to discriminate white matter from gray matter, but ^<123>I could not. In addition, when a Wiener filter was used, SPECT images of almost equal quality could be obtained with a dose of 10〜30 mCi.

In the process of producing X ray images, intensifying screens obviously play a major role in determining the image quality and the X ray dose received by the patient. Unfortunately, however, no obtained quantitative study has been done to determine whether X rays radiated from an X ray tube are effectively utilized. In the present study, from the viewpoint that the X ray utilization efficiency of intensifying screens is identical with that of the radiography system used, the X ray absorption and transmission of phantoms, contrast media and intensifying screens at different X ray tube voltages with various additional filters were investigated. Also, a systematic analysis of the process by which X rays radiate from an X ray tube and become useless after passing through each type of absorbing material was conducted using X ray spectra, and the importance of intensifying screens as a radiography system was described. It was found that in screen-film systems, which have recently become very diverse, the K absorption edge of the phosphor used in intensifying screens is quite important as a factor affecting the radiographic contrast because of its combined effect with the contrast medium, and that the application of intensifying screens should be selected by considering the tube voltage, the part of the body examined and the contrast medium used. Furthermore, as a method for decreasing the X ray dose, which is as important as the image quality, the X ray absorption of intensifying screens must be considered. Thus, by using the most suitable tube voltage and additional filter by analysis of X ray absorption, not as a single value but as an X ray spectrum, a greater effect can be expected.
