Only a few studies have been reported on the measurement and evaluation of the effective energy of scattering X-rays using an ionization chamber. The reason for this is due to the difficulty in accurately measuring attenuation curve in scattering X-rays lacking any directional properties. We could come up with a new method for calculating the effective energy of scattering X-rays by utilizing their spectra data. First, for analysing the accuracy of our calculation method with using primary X-rays, a comparison was made of calculated values of the effective energy obtained by our calculation method with the measurement values obtained using an ionization chamber. The results gave the calculated values agreeing with the measurement values within a maximum error of 2%, and this method was very helpful in measuring the effective energy of the scattering X-rays. Consequently, this method was eapable of measuring the effective energy of scattering X-rays in the following parameters: X-ray tube voltage, scattering angle and size of scatterer. In conclusion, it is considered that our method could solve the present difficulty regarding the measurement of effective energy of the scattering X-rays, and provided a useful procedure conearing the study of radiation protection.

The computed radiography(CR) system with an imaging plate has been widely used in diagnostic radiography. Recently, imaging plate detectors are also being used in other fields as a two-dimensional detector for radiasions. This study could show imagies of scattered X-rays from the object or patients in diagnostic radiography, using a pinhole camera and a CR system. Utilizing the high sensitivity and wibe dynamic range characteristics of the CR system made it possible to obtain image scattered X-rays. The results of this study indicated that 1)scattered X-rays were much generated to agreat extent from the primary X-ray incident side of the object, 2)were greatly generated from low density materials such as water, muscular and fatty tissues compared with high density materials such as a contrast medium and bones, and 3)images of the scattered X-rays from patients in diagnostic radiograph were able to be obtained.

We have evaluated the physical characteristics of the brain SPECT images using a texture analysis, and have analyzed them with the radius and angle direction distribution function in the power spectrum. When the amplitude of the frequency component of the brain phantom planar image to 100% was normalized, component in the measurement system varied from about 30 to 40% using various collimators and from about 20 to 30% using various radionuclides. Therefore, the radius and angle direction distribution function in the power spectrum may not only be good qualitative but quantitative as well for a SPECT image evaluation.

For in determining the mean incident energy of electron beams(E^^__0), we have to get percentage depth dose(PDD) and for this, we also have to spend a great deal of time collecting data and Carrying out calculations. Using the water phantom system and the 0.1 ml ionization chamber, if it is possible to calculate E^^__0 according to the JARP protocol, we were able to come up with an efficient calculating system. We have developed an application program for calculating E^^__0 in according to the JARP protocol by taking raw data of the water phantom system, and study calculating the absorbed dose conversion factors of electron beams(C_E)in all ionization chambers with mean energy in water(E^^__d)and water/air mean restricted collision mass stopping power ratio(L^^_/ρ)_<w, a> of E^^__0. After comparing the measurements between the 0.1 ml ionization chamber, 0.6 ml ionization chamber and shallow ionization chamber, both PDD and E^^__0 agree with the measurement errors. So that it is quite possible to measure E^^__0 by using a 0.1 ml ionization chamber. C_E of 0.6 ml and shallow ionization chamber which already had calculated E^^__d and(L^^_/ρ)_<w, a> of 0.1 ml ionization chamber show errors within 0.53% as compared with C_E of 0.6 ml and shallow ionization chamber. However calculating of C_E can not eliminate the physical erros, because the P_f formula is an approximate formula due to the use of(L^^_/ρ)_<w, a> of ⊿=10 keV, but we thought that change of C_E for fluctuations in E^^__0 could be confirmed.

Single photon emission computed tomography(SPECT) is being widely used for thallium-201 myocardial perfusion imaging. The reoriented oblique slices provide three-dimentional information. Since the position and rotation of the heart varies considerably according to the person, we need to determine the angle of the left ventricular long-axis in original transverse slices manually, which may result in a probrem during reproducibility. We have, thereby, developed two methods for automatic determination of the angle of the left ventricular long-axis using processing programs. One is to detect the minimum countpoints in heart chamber at each y level and draw a regression line, and another is to detect points in septal and lateral ventricular wall at a transverse slice and locate the central line of heart chamber at half width of the pairs of their points. We have applied these methods to phantom as well as clinical studies. In the phantom studies, the angle of left ventricular long-axis obtained by each method matched the setting angle of the phantom. In addition, in the exercise myocardial perfusion studies, 18 of 23 patients showed good agreement using the second method with the standard data, which were manually determined by an experienced operator. Thus, the second method is considered to be useful for creating oblique slices automatically during myocardial perfusion imaging.
