Upward creep is reported to occur in exercise myocardial perfusion SPECT imaging due to a transient increasein the mean total pulmonary volume associated with exerise. We carried out the following study to clarify the artifact caused by upward creep. The frequency and characteristics of upward creep were evaluated in 225 patients who underwent exercise myocardial perfusion SPECT. Upward creep of 1 pixel or greater was noted in about 70% of the patients examined immediately after the end of the exercise protocol, and it could be classified into 4 patterns. When reproduction of these types of upward creep was attempted using a myocardial phantom, the artifact increased with the pixel shift caused by larger upward creep, and a characteristic artifact was appeared in each pattern of upward creep. Moreover, the intensity of the artifact varied with the radionuclide used for myocardial perfusion SPECT.

An additional filter on the collimator of X-ray tube is useful to reduce exposure dose during x-ray fluoroscopy in interventional radiology(IVR). In this study, exposure doses to the patients and operators were measured after creating differential image qualities using an additional filter. We made an additional filter(spot filter)consisting of a copper sheet with an open hole in the center. The quality of the fluoroscopic image, the exposure dose and tube loading were measured at different thicknesses of the spot filter in a phantom study. Using this filter, the image quality was improved at the target region of the image intensifier(I.I.), because scatter radiation was attenuated at the periphery. Although image quality deteriorated at the periphery, there was no significant disadvantage for IVR. By keeping x-ray tube loading as low as possible, exposure dose to the patient and scatter dose to the operator could be decreased further.

In order to evaluate simultaneously both myocardial perfusion and regional wall motion using EGG-gated myocardial SPECT imaging, correction for the partial volume effect(PVE)should be performed. For the quantitative analysis of myocardial SPECT imaging in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy(HCM), we formed a new phantom simulating HCM with various septal wall thicknesses and estimated PVE using the recovery coefficient(RC). The value of RC in all phantoms increased with increasing thickness of the septal wall reaching a plateau at 25mm for the cylindrical phantom and 25mm for the Ep-phantom. Compared with the RC value, the PMMA-phantom has little influence on PVE. Therefore, our results suggested that the count in the septal wall could be underestimated if PVE was corrected by the value obtained for the cylindrical phantom. In conclusion, our new phantom simulating HCM was useful in assessing PVE in the hypertrophic septal wall.

Fast spin echo(FSE)imaging technique has been indispensable in clinical MRI. This technique reduced acquisition time compared with conventional spin echo sequences. However, this technique introduces new factors, such as echo train lentgh(ETL)and interecho spacing and is susceptible to a new set of artifacts, such as image blurring secondary to nonuniform sampling K-space. Therefore, the effects of spatial resolution of FSE images on echo train lengh and interecho spacing were measured using the final MTF. FSE images of the chart phantom with some ETLs and bandwidth were exposed on laser films and measured by micro-densitometer in the phase-encoding direction. Using the final MTF method, the FSE images were evaluated for spatial resolution. Increasing ETL reduced spatial resolution on FSE images. The proton-density-weighted images were more conspicuous. Decreasing the bandwidth reduced spatial resolution on FSE images because of increasing interecho spacing.
