In this study, we investigated the correlation between physical and visual evaluations of six screen and film systems. The physical evaluation was expressed as NEQ(u), whereas the visual evaluation was expressed as a relative value resulting from Thurstone's method of paired comparisons between the radiographs of chest and foot phantoms. The physical and visual evaluations were found to be closely correlated. In addition, we obtained Spearman's correlation coefficients by rank for several spatial frequencies.

We compared the differences in absolute speed of four screen-film systems in seven institutions. Four different screens (HR-4, Fuji; Lanex Medium, Kodak; Lanex 250, Kodak; and HR-12, Fuji) combined with super HRS-30(Fuji) film and a beam quality of 80 kV tube voltage with a 20 mm aluminum filter were employed. Absolute speeds of the HR-4, Lanex Medium, Lanex 250, and HR-12 in combination with super HRS-30 were 1.83 mR^<-1>, 2.72mR^<-1>, 2.79mR^<-1>, and 5.35mR^<-1>(average of seven institutions), respectively. The variation in speed was about ±10% for the seven institutions. Two factors (film processor and densitometer) affecting absolute speed were analyzed. The absolute speed measured in seven institutions varied ±14% depending on the film processor (development conditions) and ±3% depending on the densitometer employed in each institution.

Using the Fano theorem, we determined the minimum square field that can establish lateral electron equilibrium in water for 10 MV x-rays. The minimum square field is 3.5×3.5 cm^2. This field size is the same as that proposed by Iwasaki. In addition, we obtained a set of phantom scatter correction factors (S_p) at small fields providing lateral electron nonequilibrium and then supplied the S_p data to the 3-D radiation treatment planning system called FOCUS. Using the planning system, we produced tissue-phantom ratio (TPR) data from measured percentage depth dose (PDD) data. It was found that the zero-area TPR obtained by extrapolation has two different values, one obtained using TPR data at fields greater than 3.5×3.5 cm^2 and the other obtained using TPR data at fields smaller than 3.5×3.5 cm^2.

It is very important that x-ray tube voltage be accurately measured and evaluated in mammography. However, this is time-consuming work. Therefore, we used non-invasive x-ray analyzers (MODEL 100, KYOKKO; NERO 6000M, VICTREEN; NOMEX, PTW). These analyzers make the measurement of x-ray tube voltage extremely easy. They result in few errors in the measurement of x-ray tube voltage, but have an effect on the environment. The measurement of exposure time corresponded closely with actual values. These analyzers have good stability and reliability. Therefore, these non-invasive x-ray analyzers are suitable for use in the quality control of mammographic equipment.

It has been difficult to obtain accurate radiographic images of the oblique cervical spine in the supine position. We developed a new technique that combined the sliding top bucky table and a radiographic supporting device. Our technique improved the reproducibility of images because the geometry was always the same. Further, no special technique is required. The radiographic magnification factor of the supine position was approximately 13% larger than that of the standing position, but image quality and clinical evaluation were almost the same. In conclusion, our new technique for oblique projection of cervical spine radiography in the supine position does not require co-workers to hold the patient. In addition, this technique provided cervical spine radiography with reduced discomfort for the patient.

Information systems are required in radiology to unify HIS, RIS, and PACS. In 1990, LAN construction plans were as follows: 1)adoption of Ethernet without dependency on traders, 2)use of image transmission with a standard transmitting protocol (TCP/IP), and 3)utilization of FTP-applications. This helped to realize image transmission among CT, MRI, and RI. From 1995 to 1996, the information system underwent a major reconstruction so that real-time image transmission could be obtained. We examined the use of FDDI (fiber distributed data interface), Switching HUB, a Unix server, and workstation in order to improve transmission speed and maintain a former system. sufficient speed for practical image transmission with the existing LAN was obtained using FDDI (100 Mbps).
