This is the second paper of the total three which deal with radiologic-pathologic correlation of diffuse pulmonary diseases. The first paper described normal roentgen anatomy of the lung and the present one will show radiologic features of pathologic lesions included in lung specimens. Multilobular infiltrative shadow was seen when air space in filled with exudates or transudates. Air bronchogram was always seen in such condition. Thickening of vascular shadows was due to perivascular infiltration of tumors or granulomas. Line shadow was due to thickening of the lobular septa. Ground glass like shadow was seen in fibrosis of alveolar septa. Centrilobular nodular shadow was seen in bronchopneumonia, tuberculosis and pneumoconiosis. Reticular or ring shadow was correlated with honeycomb lung, bullae and cystic ectasis of bronchi. Decrease of radiopacity of lung field with indistinct margin was characteristic to pulmonary emphysema.

A radiographic mottle is usually evaluated under a given X ray condition such as a tube voltage of 80 kV with 20 mm aluminum filtration. However, it is thought that radiographic mottles of the screen-film system may be influenced by the energy of X rays or the content of scattered radiation. We obtained Wiener spectra under various conditions in which the content of scattered X rays, the X ray tube voltage and the thickness of patient were changed. Several conclusions were able to be drawn from this study : (1) radiographic mottle was slightly improved under the presence of scattered X rays : (2) the magnitude of radiographic mottle decreased as tube voltage increased : (3) the radiographic mottle was almost same even when the thickness of a patient increased.

Research was undertaken on what was shown and what extent could be seen in the monitor presentation after the digitization of X ray photos and X ray images. It is well known that the spatial resolution of digitized images is determined by the sampling aperture size used for image digitization. In this study, the authors confirmed that only the objects whose thicknesses were 160 to 170% compared with the sampling aperture size could be resolved. For the reason mentioned above, during image digitization, the sampling is to be performed considering the fineness of the image to be resolved. The quantity of the data is varied with the fineness of the image.
