The moving beam technique in performing total body irradiation (TBI), which sweeps X-ray beams over the whole body is a useful technique for small treatment rooms like in our hospital. However, homogenous dose distributions for patients cannot be obtained without changing the output during of gantry rotation. We developed a method for obtaining homogenous dose distribution by changing the software of the control unit of the linac without any change in the construction of the machine. The change in the output/degree and or field width at each gantry angle can be automatically calculated using our method, and as a result, a homogenous dose of ±3% at the reference plane was obtained with a treating useful length of 200cm. From this study, though the results are still preliminary, our method could be promising in performing TBI.

Assessment was made of the three-dimensional dose distribution of open-field (O-F) beams in 54 patients with breast cancer treated by tangential breast irradiation (TBI). A new irradiation technique was developed for attaining optimum dose distribution of TBI. The treatment planning for the TBI was performed using a CT-simulator. Dose distribution was by the modified equivalent tissue maximum ratio method and normalized with respect to isocenter CT slices. For O-F beams, dose homogeneity was found to be determined by the anatomy of breast, tissue depth on central beam axis and length of the lung included in a tangential field. When tissue depth was greater than 11cm, a "hot spot" in excess of 110% of the isocenter dose could always be detected on the lateral chest wall, sternum, and near the apex of the breast. The area dose of a "hot spot" increased by the SINGLE-WEDGE-FIELD irradiation technique using a single-wedge filter for tangential beams, but decreased by the TWIN-WEDGE-FIELD (T-W-F) irradiation technique when using a twin-wedge filter. The present technique concluded the best method for treating TBI in breast cancer patients.

A new measurement method which examines relative conversion factor of X-ray image intensifiers is proposed. In this method, one fluorescence meter is used measure the image intensifier's incidence dose rate and the output luminance both instead of using one ionization chamber and one luminance meter. The advantage of this method is ease of checking the decreasing luminance of image intensifiers periodically without the need to remove the optical systems. The accuracy of this method was verified to be within 3% by twenty-four independent measurements.

We investigated the effect of the latensification technique by thallium nitrate on latest X-ray films which were used in clinical diagnosis. We observed that the relative speeds of the treated films were about 1.1〜2.7 times higher than those of the untreated ones (D=1.0), but some of the treated films had a trend to yield high fog level and uneven treatment as the effect of treatment became stronger. The treated films had a slight rising of the Wiener spectral value in comparison with the untreated films up to the 30 cycles/mm frequency. From our experimental results, it is considered that the latensification technique by thallium nitrate might be useful to intensify the image densities of the X-ray films of approximately 20〜60% under-exposure.

We investigated the influence of observation time and viewing distance in ROC rating with simple signal patterns. We measured ROC curve varying observation time and viewing distance with the same sample film sets and same observation environments. To control these factors correctly, we made special observation equipment. When the observation time was varied, 5, 10 sec and free, there was no significant difference for visual detection performance. When viewing distance was varied, 50cm and free, there was no significant difference for visual detection performance.

Inveter X-ray generators are now becoming increasingly popular, because they such advantages as control of the high accuracy and miniaturization of high voltage transformer when compared with the usual singlephase and three-phase X-ray generators. However, it is difficult to understand the characteristics of the basic performance of this type, the primary circuit component is complicated compared with the usual X-ray generators. Also it is very difficult to obtain inverter X-ray generators quickly for teaching institutions. Therefore, we tried to make a model circuit for the square wave inverter X-ray generator, so as to perform an analysis of the basic performance of the circuit composition from the power supply to the X-ray tube. As the result, we could observe waveforms of each of the component circuits using this model circuit, and making it easier to understand the characteristics of the basic performance of this type. In the present report, we made clear the relation between load, circuit constant and output waveform by the simulation method, and studied the improvement method of performance characteristics of this type.

Today, HIS (Hospital Information System) is being extensively developing for effective use and linkage with large clinical and hospital management data. In the radiological department, many devices for image diagnosing (CT, MR, DSA, CR, etc.) and irradiation therapy system use computers and these data are straged in digital format. Recently, many studies on PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System for medicine) and RIS (Radiology Information System) are being used to connected data of the radiological department with HIS. In this paper, we consider what indication is required, and what is the most effective way to retrieve and manage the large volume of hosipital data.
