Routine skull radiographs (A-P projection) were imaged by use of a head phantom and seven screen-film systems to assess the relationship between the physical image quality of a radiograph and its psychological evaluation. Three hundred and fifty skull radiographs were evaluated by five neurosurgeons and five radiologic technologists. The redundancy of information theory was used in the analysis of psychological evaluation. As compared with radiographs imaged by rare earth screen systems, those imaged by calcium tungstate screens were given a high value of subjective image evaluation. Neurosurgeons attached more importance to the graininess than the sharpness of the radiograph. Radiologic technologists had a similar tendency to neurosurgeons,but attached more importance to the sharpness in comparison with the evaluations made by neurosurgeons. If a screen-film system with a higher speed than that of the present system (LHII-RX) used in our hospital were to have good granularity, despite having less sharpness, it was shown that such a system could be used in routine skull radiography.

We devised a new conventional determination method for silver in an used fixer using 30% hydrogen peroxide (H_2.O_2). This method is very practical, because it is treatable in a short time and can detect silver to the order of 1g/l. When H_2O_2 is added to the fixer, the exothermic reaction occurs, and the mixture of Ag_2S and AgBr precipitates immediately. This reaction is a competitive one and the product ratio of Ag_2S/AgBr depends on the addition speed of H_2O_2. When H_2O_2 is rapidly added to the fixer, and if both quantities are same, the weight ratio of Ag_2S to AgBr becomes almost constant at 1:9, where the fixer contains silver of over 3.5 g/l. Therefore, the silver content of the fixer can be determined as follows : l) Add 10 ml of H,O, rapidly to 10 ml of the fixer. 2) Measure the weight of reaction products which are filtered off, washed with distilled water and dried. 3) Determine silver by assuming 60% of the silver compound by weight to be silver. The weight difference of silver was within ±5% using this method from the authentic sample. The silver content of the fixer can be obtained roughly by the combined use of a silver compound mass and commercialized silver testing paper.

In vivo labeling of red blood cells with technetium-99m (Tc-99m) has recently been recommended for blood pool imaging. We have attempted to measure circulating blood volume (CBV) by counting the activity of drawn peripheral blood while performing blood pool imaging. In order to obtain a useful method of quantitative evaluation in an in vivo study, stability of technetiurn-99m-labeled red blood cells (Tc-99m RBO in necessary. The same results were obtained in our laboratory as in previous studies already described. It was proved that red blood cell labeling efficiency was 94.8% (± 0.8%, S.D.) 15-60 minutes after intravenous injection of pertechnetate, and that Tc-99m RBC remained stable during these 60 minutes, during which time CBV for in vivo studies is available. CBVS were also simultaneously measured by methods such as the chromium-51-labeled red blood cell (Cr-51 RBC method and nomogram. A correlation coefficient of 0.900 was obtained for the CBV of the Cr-51 RBC method (4.1% overestimate) and 0.768 for the nomogram. In vitro studies (including the Cr-51 RBC method) require not only sterile but also complicated techniques. In contrast, in vivo studies can be performed more easily and rapidly in comparison with such methods. In conclusion, in vivo study with Tc-99m is recommended for evaluation of circulating blood volume in nuclear medicine.
