In daily works, sensitometry of autoprocessor must be done before x-ray examination starts. For that purpose, the best way is to use the sensitometer which makes it easy for sensitometry. In that case, however, precision of the sensitometer comes into question. The factors that cause errors are a source of light, filter, timer, optical wedge, and so on. So we made precision measurements on those items (The possible factors which cause an error in sensitometry.) of two sensitometers, WEJEX RF and FUJI 303 respectively. As a result, it was proved that a sensitometer is precise enough to work for sensitometry of the auto-processor.

We manufactured for trial an instrument which achieved the image processing using digital correlators. A digital correlator perform 64-bit parallel correlation at 20 MH. The output of a digital correlator is a 7-bit word representing. An A-D converter is used to quantize it a precision of six bits. The resulting 6-bit word is fed to six correlators, wired in parallel. The image processing achieved in 12 bits, whose digital outputs converted an analog signal by a D-A converter. This instrument is named the digital cross-correlator. The method which was used in the image processing system calculated the convolution with the digital correlator. It makes various digital filters. In the experiment with the image processing video signals from TV camera were used. The digital image processing time was approximatily 5μs. The contrast was enhanced and smoothed. The digital cross-correlator has the image processing of 16 sorts, and was produced inexpensively.

On the evaluation of radiation risk, the absorbed dose by specific organs, such as the skin or the gonads, is usually described, but it has been difficult to estimate the overall risk of patient exposed to radiation. The total energy imparted is one of the method often used for the relative estimation of total radiation risk. In this paper, its variability depending upon the condition of the X-ray exposure was evaluated and compared with the variability of skin exposure dose, the most commonly available data. Parallel variability of total energy imparted to skin radiation dose was detected as the tube voltage or the thickness of the phantom were changed or as the filter or the grid was added. Then, upon the change of FFD or field area, an independent or opposite variability was observed. Nevertheless, the skin dose-irradiated area product [rad. cm^2] registered similar variability to the total energy imparted upon changes of those mentioned factors. Consequently, it was demonstrated that the skin dose-irradiated area product [rad. cm^2], an easier to measure value, provided the relative estimation of the total radiation risk as well as the total energy imparted.

Thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLD) have gained wide acceptance and play a significant role in dose measurements in radiation therapy, diagnostics and health physics. A survey of current status of application of TLD at medical centers in Japan was carried out for obtaining some information on frequency of use of TLD and on settlement of standard use of TLD. Questionnaire mailed to the radiological technicians at the medical centers. About 70% (170 centers) of the questionnaires were completed and returned which were a good response rate for mail survey. About 75% of the respondents said that they used TLD but interestingly enough they do not use it.

Precision of dose distribution for the electronic computer (THEAC-III) in use for the radiotherapeutic design was determined by various methods of radiation. Determinations were made on the basis of the values obtained in an ionization chamber. The results obtained revealed the following : for each of the methods, dose error on central axis was ± with in 3%, and dose distribution error in the therapeutic region and in the periphery of the low dose region was within ±3% and over ±3%, respectively.

With Radplan 3D (ATC) we calculated the accuracy of computerization comparing the computerized data with the measured one. We compared the pre set beam data with the measured data using 0.1cc chamber in various method of irradiation. The result was that the total error was under 3%. The factor of the error are thought to be the followings 1. Error on taking in the beam data. 2. Error of approximation and error in writing with spark pen. 3. Error of effected SSD method in inhomogeneous correction.

It is important to notify the accuracy of dose distribution prepared by Radiotherapy Planning Computer. The following experiment was performed to compare the results of calculation dose by the MODULEX Radiotherapy Planning Computer and measured values. Under the several different conditions of irradiation by 10 MV X-ray Linear Accelerator. The results were shown that the difference between measured values and calculated values were less than 3% and calculated data by Radiotherapy Planning Computer were accurate enough for routine use. The accuracy of computer calculated data depend so much on calculation system and accuracy of input data that careful management of raw data were needed.

Special purpose equipments, whose CT display can be used for radiotherapy planning directly, cost a lot and not good for general use. We developed our own hardware and completed general purpose therapy planning equipments with which we can use CT display directly. They consist of 1. 512×512×16 Level Graphic Display Equipment 2. Joystick 3. Floppy Disc Interface and others. With these equipments, we examined tablet-used radiotherapy planning and calculation of dose distribution of every pixel of CT display. And we got ±1% error in calculation and ±5% error in dose distribution display. And tablet input was also superior in processing speed.
