For diagnostic X-ray images, the quantity of scattered radiation, which influences the image quality, is generally estimated in terms of the "scatter fraction". To improve the image quality, it is necessary to devise a way to decrease the influence of scattered radiation. For that purpose, one must have an understanding of the mechanism of influence on the images, together with the quantity that is expressed by scatter fractions. In the present study, by means of a Monte Carlo simulation, we calculated the energy spectra of the primary and scattered radiation, which was absorbed on the screen systems in radiography, and analyzed the influence of the scattered radiation. As a result, not only quantity, which is expressed by the scatter fractions, but also the spectrum make a difference to the influence of scattered radiation. Also, scatter fractions depend on exposure parameters and screen systems; however, mechanisms of dependence are different respectively.

^<99m>Tc-methylene diphosphonate (^<99m>Tc-MDP), which is excreted through the urinary tract and partly accumulated on the content of bladder, is the most common radiopharmaceutical form among the current bone scintigraphy. In order to find the methods decreasing the exposure of the whole body and the bladder, 15 patients were selected for the present study. Neither of them had renal disorder, nor demonstrated abnormal radionuclide increased uptake over the whole bones. They were divided into two groups; i. e 10 patients were forced to take fluid during examination and the other 5 patients were orderd not to take fluid. After administration of ^<99m>Tc-MDP, whole body activity was compared between these 2 groups. At the same time, exposure of patients' wall of the bladder was estimated from their urine activity. Forced fluid intake group received less radioactive exposure to the whole body than no fluid intake group did. For the forced fluid intake group, it is estimated that expousure of the wall of bladder can be reduced about 40% if one avoids urine in 50 minutes after administration of ^<99m>Tc-MDP insted of avoiding urine in 120 minutes.

Helical scanning, a computed tomographic technique using a continuously rotating X-ray tube in combination with a continuously moving table, was applied to chest scans. The usefulness of this procedure as a tool for mass-screening was evaluated. Conventional chest CT has a drawback because the entire process for scanning takes a long time. Namely, the prolonged scanning requires the patient to renew the air in his/her lungs during the course of scanning, resulting in a change in respiratory phase thereafter. This gives rise to inconsistency among the resultant serial tomograms. The helical scanning at a table speed of 20-25mm/sec reduces the scanning time of the entire lungs to about 10-15 sec. Consequently, it can be completed without changing the position of the lungs while the patient has stopped his/her breathing. This technique, which can easily detect even a lesion as small as about 5mm in diameter in the lungs, is very useful for mass-screening of chest diseases. In future, detection of early lung cancer by mass-screening for a high risk group will become possible when high-speed helical scanning becomes available.

A variety of reliable noninvasive methods for the determination of bone mineral have been developed. In recent years, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) systems using a single detector and a pencil beam have been widely used for axial bone mineral determination. Although DEXA has improved assay precision, accuracy, and quality of image, it takes 5-10 min. for data-acquisition of the first to fourth lumbar vertebra. To shorten data-acquisition time, a new DEXA system (DCS-3000), in which multiple detectors and a fan beam are employed, has been developed. In this paper, fundamental studies of the DCS-3000 are described.
