We investigated and compared signal intesity and the effect of imaging the upper abdomen with blueberry juice (B. J. ), a Mn agent utilizing the properties of paramagnetic metals, and FerriSeltz (F. S.), an iron agent. Since the relaxation effect was much stronger with B. J. than with F. S., the signal intensity required of a peroral contrast agent was able to be obtained at a much lower concentration of B. J. In imaging the upper abdomen, B. J. had a positive effect on imaging in T1-weighted images, and a negative effect in T2-weighted images. F. S. had a positive imaging effect in both, and because it showed extremely high signals in T2-weighted images, motion artifact arose.

The Cadmium-Telluride (CdTe) semiconductor, which can be used at normal temperatures without cooling, was recently developed for the measurement of X-ray spectra. In this paper, we calculated the energy-dependent responses of CdTe semi-conductor detectors to X-ray photon beams by means of the Monte Carlo simulation. The CdTe semiconductor showed higher K-escape fractions and lower photo-peak efficiencies than the high purity Germanium (HPGe) semiconductor that has generally been used for X-ray spectra measurements. Therefore, it is assumed that the output spectra measured by the CdTe detector are more distorted than those measured by the HPGe detector. The X-ray spectra measured by CdTe semiconductor detectors must be corrected to account for the energy dependent response of CdTe.

Manganese chloride (Mn : 3mg/100g) aqueous solution with hydragenated oligosaccharide and xanthan gum (T_1 : 0.1sec, T_2 : 0.03sec at 0.5T) functions in gut as a positive contrast agent on MR T_1-weighted images and a low signal component on MR T_2-weighted images. The manganese in the solution functions as a contrast agent under free manganese ion (Mn^<2+>). Further, the solution has special characteristics in terms of MRI signal intensity and relaxation time that are equal to those of blueberry juice, which performs as an effective contrast agent on T_1-and T_2-weighted images, and functions as a contrast agent in vitro and in vivo.

We studied the image detectability of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) quantitatively with the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) using the method of continuously-distributed test result. These images were processed using a low pass filter with differently arranged cut-off frequency values, on the other hand, other processes were kept constant. As a result, in general the highest detectability of cold lesions with 10mm and 15mm diameter signals were at 0.18cycles/pixel (c/p) and 0.15c/p of cut-off frequency. Otherwise, the highest detectability of the signal location was at 0.15c/p or 0.12c/p of cut-off frequency when the distance of the signal location to the center of the phantom was less than 8cm. At the border of the phantom, peak detectability was shown to be 0.20c/p. In conclusion, the detectability of signal locations differed at nearby center and border of the phantom when when the value of the cut-off frequency arranged by low pass filter was changed.

The present study was performed to evaluate quality of bone scintigraphy in patients with and without water loading, Patients wer divided into two groups ; group I (n=19) was loaded water. Group I patients were loaded water within 5min after Tc-99m HMDP injection. Group II (n=19) was not loaded water. Group II patients were limited in water in take until the acquisition of radionuclide data. Bone scintigraphy was obtained about 3.3 hr after radiotracer administrarion. Regions of interest were placed manually ober those of whole-body, femoral bone, rib and soft tissue. The average counts of whole-body were 712322±121701 in group. and 854631±167015 in group II. The results were significantly different between groups I and II (p<0.05). Further, the ratio of average pixel counts in femoral bone and rib against soft tissue showed a significant difference between groups I and II (p<0.05). In conclusion, our data emphasize that water loading after Tc-99m HMDP injection may contribute to improve the scintigraphic contrast.
