Our ten years experience on radiologic-pathologic correlations of the lung specimens has proven useful for accurate interpretation of chest radiogram and CT with diffuse lung diseases. The studies are divided into four contents as follows. (1) Preparation of lung specimens and methods of analyzing them (2) Normal roentgen anatomy of the lung (3) Radiologic-pathologic correlation of diffuse pulmonary diseases (4) Interpretation of chest radiogram and CT of diffuse lung diseases based on the above studies This article deals with the first two. The lung obtained at autopsy was inflated and fixed with liquid fixatives. After fixation the lung was sliced and dried for stereomicroscopic and radiographic studies. Five mm thick slices were useful for reconstruct the major bronchi and vessels, while one mm thick slices were suitable for peripheral structures. Three surfaces and margins were noted on the lung. Special attention was paid to the grooves for superior vena cava and aorta and to crista pulmonis to understand normal chest radiogram. In the sliced lung specimens it was noted that pulmonary arteries and bronchi run together, while pulmonary veins are away from these structures. This was recognized both at segmental and lobular level.

When joining beams of a high energy photon, one of the most important problems is the dose non-homogeneity in the matching region. To solve this problem, a technique to create a wide pseudo-penumbra has been developed. The wedge to create the wide penumbra is a match-line wedge, and its shape is defined by photon energy, spreading, flatness and the geometry of the beam. In this study, the shape of the match-line wedge for a 10 MV photon was determined. Comparison of several matching methods, those are skin gap method and shifting gap method, are made.

The performance of an X-ray focal spot was evaluated by three moment values of the normalized X-ray intensity distribution ; i.e., the square root of the second moment about the mean (RMS), and the third and the fourth order moments normalized by RMS. These three numbers provide especially important imaging properties of focal spot. RMS correlates well with the low-frequency performance of MTF. High-frequency performance of MTF which cannot be estimated by RMS is evaluated by the fourth order normalized moment. The symmetry of the distribution can be evaluated by the third order normalized moment.

In this paper, the general formulas concerning detective quantum efficiency (DQE) and noise-equivalent number of quanta (NEQ) were theoretically derived. DQE and NEQ become maximum in value when the scanning aperture of the micro-densitometer is the same size and form of the subject. Mathematically and strictly, DQE(u) and NEQ(u) were formally defined, in the integration of spatial frequency area by applying the inequality of Schwarz. Each integration of the product of DQE(u) or NEQ(u) due to the subjective power spectrum (or of the scanning aperture) is DQE_<max> and NEQ_<max>, respectively. Where, NEQ_<max> is qA・DQE_<max>. The detectability d' on the signal detection theory corresponds to √<NEQ_<max>>. Therefore, consequently, in the surrounding of the next important formula, [numerical formula] derived from the signal detection theory it became not only easy to understand but also close to be connected with many sorts of the results regarding the fields of the stochastic matrix theory, the frequency analysis theory, the photophysics and the statistical psychophysics. NEQ has a strong correlation to NEQ_<max> and the ability of image quality evaluation, but each image quality is necessarily compared with both NEQs, measured by circular apertures of larger and smaller diameters than approximate 0.3 mm under the conditions used in this paper.
