Individual characteristics such as sex, age, height and weight have been considered as the factors influencing bone mineral density (BMD). The purpose of this study is to analyze the relation between these factors and the data of BMD obtained from 387 healty old persons (176 males and 211 females) at the age of 65 and over who are living in an urban community in a western suburb of Tokyo and chosen by randomized sampling. BMD of the third lumbar spine from lateral projection using dual energy X-ray absorptiomery (DEXA) in the van was measured during a general health survey which included other physical examinations such as weight, height, blood pressure and so on. BMD obtained was analyzed in relation to these variables using both simple and multiple regression analyses. Standard regression coefficients showed that all physical variables had a significant relationship to BMD except the height in males. Standard regression coefficients of height and age for the males were the same, but height was evaluated to have slight influence on BMD by statistically. In a multiple regression analysis, the multiple correlation coefficient was somewhat lower in both sexes (males : R=0.448; females : R=0.381) than expected. Our analyses of these factors showed that there might be other possible factors influencing BMD regarding the elderly with the exception of age, sex, height and weight.

The machine fault analysis program was fed into a notebook-type personal computer using the method of fault tree analysis method. It is able to isolate any trouble spots and promptly indicates countermeasures necessary at the equipment site. The key features of this program are as follows : 1) Using a handy personal computer, a decision can be promptly made on the spot as to whether the trouble can be repaired by RT or if a service man must be called in. 2) By referring to the program record of the service history, earlier measures taken by a service representative can be followed by the Radiological Technologists, if feasible. 3) By isolating the trouble spot before a service call, necessary parts can be arranged in advance, greatly to reducing the downtime. 4) By referring to the service history, parts likely to cause trouble can be checked beforehand for preventative maintenance. 5) This simulation program helps train new RTs on proper procedures in the event of equipment breakdown.

Serum myosin light chain I (LCI) levels were quantitated serially using an immunoradiometric assay kit (myosin LI kit "Yamasa") in 60 patients with heart diseases including 43 cases of acute myocardial infarction and 13 cases of unstable angina. All but one case of acute myocardial infarctions showed elevated LCI values (>2.5ng/ml). In these cases, LCI began to increase after 4〜8 hours from the onset and continued at high levels for at least 7 days. In one case for whom PTCA was conducted very soon following time of onset, LCI was within normal limits in spite of a marked elevation of serum CPK. In 13 cases of unstable angina, 5 showed elevated LCI, suggesting myocardial necrosis to a slight degree. In case of myocarditis with severe heart failure, LCI was markedly elevated. Measurement of serum LCI would thus appear quite useful for detecting myocardial necrosis and assessing its severity.

In cases with hemifacial spasm conventional MRI scanned by coronal or axial image has been limited to the visualization of large vessels compressing the facial nerve. We therefore examined an oblique sagittal (OS) imaging method which was developed to provide better visualization process of vascular compression of nerves. Our OS views were scanned along the nerve identified by the axial view, which was scanned at 105° to the lines along the dorsal brain stem and the pontomedullary junction. The axial plane, scanned at 105° to this baseline, permits the facial nerve to be clearly delineated in a high percentage of cases. The OS gradient echo was utilized to understand the most clearly visualized compression of the nerve as high intensity line, even if the compressing vessel was smaller than those of the shown previously. This technique also made it easier to visualize the locations and directional of vessels, which compresses the nerves. By studying the slice directions and imaging parameters and setting the baseline, we have improved the accuracy of MRI examinations using our method which provides effective preoperative data for hemifacial spasm.

Experiments and examinations were carried out on quality control for rapid X-ray film processors. For heightening the accuracy of quality control, it is necessary to grasp beforehand the performance and characteristics of film, sensitometers, densitometers and others. In particular, as for sensitometric strip film, newly produced film must be used. The performance of recent rapid X-ray film processors has been improved compared with former processors. To carry out quality control as regards developers not only the results in heightening of the quality of clinical images but also is useful for quality control in the related equipment are needed.

This article summarizes development of chest radiology in Japan. The general feature of chest radiology in Japan is characterized by extensive correlative studies between lung specimens and clinical radiologic images such as chest radiograph, tomograph and recent CT. Bofore 1960's pulmonary tuberculosis and silicosis were the major diseases. Despite limited quality of chest radiograph these diseases were diagnosed correctly because of inherent higher contrast of pathologic lesions. In the next 20years until the end of 1970's both lung cancer and diffuse lung diseases other than tuberculosis and silicosis were the major concern in our society. For lung cancer higher kV radiograph was recommended to expand visibility of lung parenchyma and airways behind bone and mediastinum. Conventional tomography was used extensively to diagnose a nodule and malignant features of pulmonary vessels and bronchi related to the tumor. The role of tomography was established by correlation with surgically resected lung specimens. In contrast, tomography was not useful for diffuse lung diseases. A big gap was noticed between chest radiograph and histology. This problem has been solved to some extent by high resolution CT which was applied to diffuse lung diseases in Japan in 1979. Since then extensive correltaive studies have been performed between CT and inflated lung specimens, and CT has proven to be closer to macroscopic findings of inflated lung specimens. High resolution CT has revealed summation effect and relatively poor contrast resolution are the major problem to be solved in chest radiography of diffuse lung diseases.

A fact-finding survey carried out by the Radiology Department of our society in 1985 and 1990 revealed that the processing time of an X-ray film processor is 90 sec for more than about 90% of all X-rays. Thus, 90 sec-processing was defined as the "standard processing" time for the present, and 45 sec processing was called "high-speed processing" in terms of the diffusion rate of the Radiology Department and the degree of completion of processing systems. At present, high-speed processing is not applicable to all X-ray films. We checked if there were any problems or retreatment due to the increase in the processing speed and application of orthochromatic films that have been conducted several times, but we were unable to find any such film. The increase in the processing speed is greatly advantageous for to clinical diagnosis if the performance of processors is same as before. To complete the high-speed processing system, but the necessary customer should have not only the excellent judgement but the necessary requirements. Inaddition, it is also necessary to select and purchase products that are gentle to the globe, at the same time with requesting manufacturers to supply products that produce less waste and help conseveous resources.

The rapid processing system for medical film is equal to or superior image quality to the conventional processing system (90 sec processing). In the orthochromatic system, technical improvements in medical film and screens have been remarkable, and though the speed is still equal to the conventional regularchromatic system, image quality has been advanced remarkably. We expect that image quality of the comparative low-speed orthochromatic system for chest X-ray examinations progress with the rapid processing system for medical film.
