In order to extend the application of the conformation radiotherapy, a linear accelerator was equipped with over-centerable multi-leaf collimators. The off-center ratio in a 10 MV Xray off-center beam with over-centerable collimators was measured. For the measurement, the same saurce situation, phantom, chamber between the off-center beam and normal beam with symmetric collimators was made and compared with the dose profile curves of both them. The dose profiles of the off-center beam are inclined to the rotational center of gantry. With the increase distance from the center, the dose profiles showed an increase in the gradient but with the increase depth of the phantom, a decrease was shown. Dose of off-center beam showed a decrease of about 3〜5% at the off-center distance of 52 and 87mm. Energy of the off-center beam had almost no change because the proportion of dose decrease had no change with the depth of the phantom. The off-center ratio data of the off-center beam has not been used in the algorism of the radiation treatment planning system. So the calculated dose values are estimated high at the rotation center side. The calculated values compared with the measured values concided with a 4% error.

The photographic density of cineradiography can be easily controlled, if the characteristic curve of cine film measurd by the intensity scale method, precisely indicates relative exposure and photographic density in cineradiography. This was attempted using a photographic strobe light unit (strobe) as the light source for a sensitometer. In this paper, evaluation was made of the uniformity of light intensity distribution of strobe light in an exposured field. The sensitometer using strobe as the light source (strobe sensitometer) was manufactured, and a comparison was made with X-ray sensitometry, and long-term stability of exposure quantity of strobe sensitometer. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. The white semi-transparent acrylic board (wide panel) used for diffusion of strobe light, has no effect on the spectrum of a green filter. 2. The uniformity of light intensity distribution in strobe sensitometer can be determinded using a wide panel and mirror. 3. The characteristic curve obtained by strobe sensitometer, is essentially equivalent to that of the X-ray ND method. 4. Strobe sensitometer provides exposure with long-term stablity.

Fluorine-19 (F-19) has a spin of 1/2 and has a 100% natural abundance. Thus, F-19 NMR allows direct observation of fluorinated drugs in the human body without background signal. A fluorinated antibiotic, Flomoxef Sodium (FMOX) can be observed noninvasively in the patient. Spectra were taken on a 1.5-T SIGNA MR imaging system. Shimming was performed on the tissue water resonance with the surface coil in the transmit/receive (t/r) mode. Spectra were taken with a surface coil in the t/r mode. A reference sample of 5-FU was mounted in the center of the coil. Nonselective 90°pulses were used. Preliminary sensitivity feasibility studies were carried out with 3-L plastic bottle as phantom with millimolar concentrations of FMOX. The relation between the transmitter power and signal level observed was measured using phantom experiments. And the sensitivity profile of the surface coil was also measured using phantom experiments. In clinical use, a bolus of 50mL of FMOX solution in a concentration of 2g/100mL FMOX was injected through an antecubital vein of the patient, followed by a infusion of 50mL of FMOX solution over approximately 8min. Aquisition of the spectra began as soon as the drug administration started and continued at 10min intervals for up to 1-hour thereafter. Serial spectra revealed the time course of the relative concentrations of FMOX in the target volume of each patient. This study demonstrates that it is possible to observe fluorine containing drugs in humans by F-19 NMR, as well as to directly estimate the time course of the drug's in vivo movement

In portal images with high energy X-ray (10MV), it is sometimes difficult to verify the irradiation field because of the low contrast. Especially, in the abdominal and pelvic region, the deterioration of portal image quality is remarkable. To solve this problem, we took portal images using computed radiography (FCR). Also, we develop a technique in which a copper plate (3mm) and lead foil (0.3mm) are closely set in the front and rear of a photostimulable phosphor plate (imaging plate), for increased energy absorption. As a result, image quality was very high and we confirmed image improvement using observer performance experiments. We made a special cassette which can closely set metallic plates to imaging plate and load FCR-7000 directly. Therefore, image process becomes simple, and suitable for routine work. In computed radiography, image processing (tone scale modification and edge enhancement) is possible, and is advantageous portal imaging. When PACS is introduced to the radiation therapy section, digitization of portal images will be indispensable, so we think this system is very important.

Recently, high-energy photon narrow beams, less than several cm in diameter, were going to use for the purpose of the stereotactic radiosurgery with a linear accelerator. In this paper, we analyzed the physical characteristics of high-energy X-ray narrow beams by means of a Monte Carlo simulation, and discussed their peculiar phenomena. When the beam size of high-energy X-ray became smaller, in addition to a decrement in the scattered doses, the decrease in the primary doses began from a certain beam size due to the failure of the electron equilibrium in the side direction. This caused sharp fall-off on the percentage depth doses, off-center ratios and output factors, with a shallowing the maximum dose depth. In dose calculations for high-energy X-ray narrow beams, it is necessary to estimate the primary doses, which take into account the electron transport.

Digital cine angio system was developed a few years ago and is being using widely for cardiac examinations. However, the image quality of digital imaging in clinical examinations is seldom evaluated. We have attempted to evaluate the digital imaging in D.C.I. First, each segment of coronary arteries that is exposed in routine projection angle were visually evaluated. Second, regarding the appearance of the coronary arteries on the diaphragm we compared digital imaging with cine film. As a result, the image quality of the coronary arteries except for segments 7 to 10 (classified by A.H.A.) was evaluated as being good. Regarding the appearance of coronary arteries on a diaphragm, digital imaging was evaluated higher than cine film. In this report, the advantages of digital imaging in coronary angiography were studied.

Using ultrasonography, 36 hip joints of 18 infants up to the age of 11 months were examined. Coronal ultrasonograms obtained with the Graf method were observed and compared with plain frontal radiograms taken simultaneously. Soft tissue of the infant hips in the ultrasonograms that corresponded to plain frontal radiograms could be identified. From the results ultrasonography is seen as being useful to observe the soft tissue of the infant hips.
