We report fluctuations in CT value(HU)in accordance with the anode heating percentage of the x-ray tube. We measured the CT value after changing the anode heating percentage of the x-ray tube in three CT machines. Our results demonstrated fluctuation in the CT value in the two CT machines that had the beam trimmer in the front of the detector. This fluctuation increased as section thickness decreased. The cause of fluctuation was movement of the focus to the cathode side, because the anode expanded with heat. The movement of the focus caused shading of the x-ray by the beam trimmer, and fluctuation of the x-ray dose to the detector caused fluctuation of the CT value and standard deviation (SD). In order to decrease fluctuation of the CT value, it is necessary to check and adjust the alignment of the x-ray tube, slit, beam trimmer, and detector.

Half-fourier single-shot turbo spin echo (HASTE) sequences have recently been used in magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) and brain T_2 dynamic MR imaging. However, no report has addressed the spatial blurring found in HASTE sequences. Therefore, phantom experiments were cerried out with HASTE sequences, and the relationships between spatial blurring and the number of data, and spatial blurring and T_2 values were examined by performing modulation transfer function (MTF) measurements. MTF values increased as the number of data increased, and decreased with decreasing T_2 values. These results indicate that spatial blurring depends on the number of data and the T_2 value. These experimental results provided quantitative evidence that spatial blurring depends on the number of data and the T_2 values in the HASTE sequence.

A hospital information system (HIS) has been used in the Hiroshima University Dental Hospital since 1995. To more efficiently carry out routine daily work in the department of oral maxillofacial radiology, we added a new order entry system that operates on HIS in November 1996. This system performs four oprations:setting up accounts for radiographic examinations;providing documentation for health insurance;efficiently managing routine daily work in the department of oral and maxillofacial radiology, including the managment of x-ray records and archives of x-ray films;and assisting clinical researches with statistical calculations. Although it takes about 20 seconds for radiographers to record each radiographic examination on the computer, the procedure ultimately saves time because the system automatically prints out labels for x-ray films and bags and calculates statistics for daily or monthly films as well as the number of patients served. Our system has been working satisfactorily, and we believe that its advantages outweigh its disadvantages.

In this paper, we describe an alogorithm for photon transport calculation, named the 'voxel-by-voxel process', to be used in Monte Carlo simulation codes with inhomogeneous media in which various material regions exist. In the voxel-by-voxel process, phantoms were constructed by dividing the volume of a rectangular prism into tiny voxels of homogeneous media. The photon free path length and/or the electron range in the voxelized phantom could be calculated uniformly using the unit of the voxel. By means of this method, Monte Carlo simulation could be performed with intricate inhomogeneous media, and the standardized Monte Carlo code could be programmed.

Image distortion caused by the susceptibility effect was compared using fast spin echo (FSE) and conventional spin echo (CSE) sequences. When the sampling bandwidth for FSE and CSE was equal, there was no diffference in image distortion. Furthermore, image distortion for the two methods remained the same when echo train length (FTL) and echo space (ES) were changed. Image distortion caused by the susceptibility effect was greatly influenced by the sampling bandwidth for both FSE and CSE imaging. This indicated that the strength of the frequency encoding gradient (readout gradient) at data collection had a considerable effect on image distortion.

It is difficult to obtain three-dimensional (3D) images by carotid three-dimensional CT-angiography (3D-CTA) in every patient, and 3D-CTA tends to be affected by the contrast medium and method of injection. We, thererfore, investigated how contrast enhancement is affected by various protocols, observing the time-density curves in the case of our original phantom and of dynamic scanning. Experiments were conducted to determine the Hounsfield unit and threshold unit by changing the diameter of the vascular model as well as the contrast enhancement and contrast medium injection protocols. When the diameter of the vascular model decreased, Hounsfied units also decreased. The higher the Hounsfield unit, the more prominent this tendency became. When the Hounsfield units of two contrast media were the same, the diameter of the vascular model affected the 3D image;the smaller the size, the higher the appropriate threshold unit. We succceeded in eliminating individual differences in the 3D images by quickly injecting a large volume of lowdensity contrast medium.

In interventional radiology (IVR), high exposue dose incurs radiological risk for the patient. In this study, we investigated the current status of patient skin dose (in seven facilities) exposed during the course of angiography. A thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) was used for the measurement. We attached the TLD device to the skin surface of the patient where x-rays were irradiated. The number cases for the purpose of diagnosis was 101:26 liver cases, 19 head cases, and 56 cardiac cases. The number of cases for interventional radiology (IVR) was 96:22 cases of liver IVR, 20 cases of head IVR, 36 cases of cardiac IVR, 13 cases of catheter ablasion, and 5 cases of abdominal IVR except liver (pelvis, renal artery, lumber artery). Thus, the total number of cases for diagnosis and IVR was 197. The average patient skin dose (70 μm dose equivalent) was 1206.0mSv (31.2-3049.3) for liver diagnosis, 2837.2mSv (230.6-6590.4) for liver IVR, 805.4mSv (58.8-3144.4) for head diagnosis, 4953.9mSv (357.5-24383.2) for head IVR, 439.2mSv (15.3-1734.6) for cardiac diagnosis, 618.7 mSv (26.6-2689.0) for cardiac IVR, 856.9 mSv (44.3-2562.6) for catheter ablasion, and 4509.7 mSv (1736.8-8576.8) for abdominal IVR.
