    Early glottic cancer is generelly treated with external irradiation. The cure rate is 80-90%. The remaining 10-20% recurrence rate is partly due to the physical factors and depends on the malignancy of tumor itself. In order to reduce recurrence rate due to physical factors such as dose distribution, parallel opposed fields with thin wedge filters (7.5°-15°) should be employed according to size of the neck of each patient. We have classified the neck sizes into three groups : small, medium and large. We made up aluminum thin wedge filters (7.5°, 13°, 15°) and standard neck phantoms. Dose distribution for early glottic cancer was obtained by using a multiple input semiconductor dosimeter and computer.

    Performance of daily using 36 automatic density control systems for direct radiography, the so-called photo-timing units, being widely accepted in Japan recently was tested by users employing three measuring criteria : phantom thickness, X-ray tube voltage and time response. In addition, normal performance of the typical units among them are discussed. Fourteen units were tested in 1977 and twenty two units in 1982. According to the test results, there were 3 units in 1977 and 4 in 1982 that had normal performance. Actual performance of the automatic density control system for direct radiography is influenced by the dynamic characteristics of the coupled X-ray generators. Looked at from this viewpoint, the generator dynamic characteristics were measured. The fundamental characteristics were discussed in connection with the responses from these generators, and the normal performance of these units is given in the following figures.

    Retrograde cystourethrograms of adult males usually necessitates the manual injection of a contrast medium, which has several drawbacks such as exposure of the medical staffs, inaccuracy of the injection-timing and inconsistent reproducibility. The use of an automatic injector has the ability to overcome the above problems. We conducted a comparative study of 93 cases of involving retrograde cystourethrograms since July 1983 in terms of function tests of an automatic injector (injected pressure, volume and velocity), image-quality and questionaire from 65 examinees regarding psychological and physical effects. There were finally able to determine the optimum conditions attaining excellent image-quality, i.e., maximum injected pressure 1.4-1.6 kg/cm^2 and injected velocity of the contrast medium 10 ml/sec, in which the first time examinees felt no painful sensation.

    One shot dual energy subtraction for chest using the FCR, IP (Imaging Plate) system that Fuji Photo Film CO., LTD. developed, was tested and the possibility of utilizing this method clinically was investigated. Putting three IPs to the IP cassette, and then putting filter material of Cu 1 mm or Sn 0.3 mm between the first layer and second layer, we took a radiograph of the chest. This method is, using the change of beam quality by absorption which is peculiar to each material, to get the energy subtraction image. Energy difference between them is about 20 keV using the Cu 1 mm or Sn 0.3 mm filter. Incident dose is increased because the radiation dose of the second layer is decreased by the absorption of the filter. However we can get a clinically significant subtraction image by image processing which uses the weighting factor to the subtraction. This method, compared with cassette changer method, has no motion artifact by time lag, phase of breath and phase of heartbeat, so it is suitable to be used for moving organs. We cannot draw a conclusion from clinical evaluation of thoracic subtraction, because it is still in the experimental stage. However we expect that it will be one of the effective methods for diagnosing diffuse lung diseases.

    Following 4 items were investigated for standardization of the ability and imaging of the scinti-camera. (1) the historical background of the ability-improvement with the analog type scinti-camera and the digital type scinti-camera with the correction system. (2) the evaluation of uniformity of the analog type scinti-camera. (3) the paramaters (LSF, MTF) which has much influence on the measurement of the scinti-camera resolution. (4) the sensitivity of the collimator and the evaluation of the noise. Result : the historical background of the scinti-camera suggested the necessity of establishing a standard for the ability evaluation of the digital type scinti-camera. (1) It is necessary to study further the characteristics of the single and multi-energy spectrums, and to establish new standards for uninformity evalution, in addition to the NEMA and the JRT standard. (2) Sampling theory plays a great role in the evaluation of the resolution measurement, because it is influenced by the sampling interval and the peak counts of LSF. (3) finally, With regard to the collimator-sensitivity and the noise evaluation, it is necessary to evaluate the noise by the wiener-spectrum method in addition to the FWHM and MTF methods. (4)

    We evaluated important factors regarding imaging technique- 1) selecting of the collimator, 2) setting of the energy peak and window width, 3) determination of the count, 4) suitable image size and 5) suitable image density. Detectability was compared with visual response using IAEA liver phantom. On the phantom study using ^<99m>Tc, we obtained the following results : count density ; 2000-3000 c/cm^2 on useful count density, image size ; 6-9 format on 8×10 inch film on useful image size, image density ; 0.5-1.5 (cold lesion) and 0.5-0.9 (hot lesion) on useful image density. It was the collimator and count that influenced the variance of the image quality more than the other factors regarding imaging technique.

    The motivation for development of radionuclide digital images are related to requirement in diagnostic quantitative data, and cost reduction in efficient image data storage and retrieval. In this study, for radionuclide digital imaging techniques, the characteristic of digital image, the evaluation of eye-brain system to matrix size and data size, and digital display system were investigated. For the stability of digital image quality it is necessary to establish the automatic digital image display method, and operator to improve the image finding ability with constant practice of observing the diagnostic images.

    At present, a large number of SPECT systems are being widely used in Japan, hence, it is reasonable for us to know the physical and imaging characteristics of these SPECT devices, and also to recommend the optimum utility of SPECT systems. For this reason, a survey respect of characteristics of the commercialy available SPECT devices was carried out. In addition to this, various factors which have significant influence over SPECT image quality, such as, data acquisition matrix, reconstruction filter, γ-ray attenuation correction and daily quality control procedure, were also investigated. The materials used for this study are PET/SPECT phantom. Alderson liver phantom filled with Tc-99m solution, and either LFOV-E or ZLC-7500 interfaced to Scintipac 2400 minicomputer with 256 K byte of memory. Following are the results of this study. 1) The suitable data acquisition procedure was 128×128 matrix for linear sampling and approximately 64 views for angular sampling. 2) Reconstructed image using pre-processing filter with Wiener and Butterworth filters provided high quality image as compared with the Ramp filter. 3) Weighted backprojection method (WBP) proposed by Tanaka was superior to other methods, such as Sorenson method and Chang method in the object with non-uniform distribution of radionuclide. 4) It was found that uniformity correction of gamma camera and precise abjustment of the center of rotation are most important to maintain the images with a high quality.
