The authors, in cooperation with TOSHIBA Co. LTD., have developed a multi-directional tomographic unit by which the sagittal plane could be taken in the supine or prone position. The apparatus is particularly useful for examinations of the sella turcica and vertebral column. It can be employed in circular (40'-0') and spiral (32'-10') movement. One of the greatest merits of the apparatus is the relif of pain on the occasion of positioning the patient. The apparatus facilitates correct and easy positioning of subjects. It also aids in the naintenance of posture and decreases truncation error due to respiartion, therefore markly raising reproducibility.

It is said that Fuji Computed Radiography (FCR), a new radiographic system, offers more improved information suitable for diagnosis and insures less exposure to radiation when compared to the conventional X-ray system. We performed an experimental study to elucidate the relation of the visibility on the tonal conversion images with the exposure and processing factors, and compared the visibility between FCR image and the conventional screen/film image by making a visibility curve. The results obtained are as follows : l) The best visibility on the FCR images was obtained when the latitude was 1.0 and a better visibility was obtained in the following order of latitude : 0.5. 2.0, and 3.6 in the image processing. 2) The FCR image which had the same visibility as the conventional screen/film image could be obtained by oneヴhirds exposure dosage (0.5 mR) of that required for the latter. However, increasing the dosage to the levels higer than 0.5 mR did not improve the visibility of the FCR images. 3) The visibility on the FCR image was inversely correlated with the tube voltage as was in the conventional screen/film system.

The accuracy of the irradiation technique used in radiotherapy for cancer of the uterine cervix was studied by in vitro and in vivo dosimetry. Radical radiation treatment for cancer of the uterine cervix was performed by external irradiation using a dose of 60 Gy of high-energy X-rays (10 MV) with the conformation hollow-out technique, and an additional 24 Gy of cobalt-60 y-rays given by intracavitary irradiation with the high-dose-rate remote afterloading technique. As post-operative irradiation therapy, 40 Gy of high-energy X-rays (10 MV) was used irradiated with the two opposed portal technique. The accuracy of the irradiation procedure is considered to be influenced by the following 3 factors ; physical factors (the accuracy of the dosimeter, clinical dosimetry, maintenance of therapeutic apparatus, etc.), radiotherapy planning (the dose-calculating accuracy of the computer, etc.) and the patients condition (patient positioning, weight loss, etc.).In the case of the conformation hollowワut technique, the accuracy was influenced by ±8 5% for in vivo dosimetry, while that for the two opposed portal technique was ±7.7%. The accuracies of these methods by in vivo dosimetry were :±7% and ±6% respectively. The aboveワbtained values for the accuracy were in relative agree. In the case of intra-cavitary irradia-tion, the irradiation accuracy shown by in vitro dosimetry for physical factors and radiotherapy planning was ±4.4%, while that for intra-rectal in vivo dosimetry was from ±20% to -10%.

Physical characteristics and diagnostic utilities were evaluated in testing imaging techniques for exclusive chest radiograms using a new ortho-type film. As a result, these film-screen systems showed low gamma, gradient, subject contrast and relative speed, and good RMS and wide latitude. Visual detectability of acryl and line beads and air images with Burger's phantom was increased when using a low tube voltage (60-80 kV). In chest radiograms using an 80 kV tube voltage and an 8 : 1 grid ratio, images of calcification, micronodule, interstice and bronchiole were better visualized and the quality of mediastinal images were as good as those of high-voltage chest radiograms. From the information yielded by our study, exclusive chest radiogram with a low-voltage technique seems worth developing for chest radiography.

Past, present and prospects of intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) was designed to overcome the limitation of surgery and radiotherapy in cancer treatment. This"direct attack"radiotherapy permits 1. accurate beam direction with field fitting, 2. precise limitation of the radiation effect to the tumor, and 3. the possibility to displace sensitive organs like skin, small intestines and lungs outside of the radiation beam. Methods and clinical results of stomach, urinary bladder, pancreas, rectum, uterine cervix and several other organs were discussed.
