1. Twenty-six male adults with gonococcal urethritis were treated with 2g single intramuscular injection of spectinomycin, administered at the Urological Clinic, Sanshin-kai Hara Hospital.
2. Assessed at 48-72 hours of spectinomycin therapy, therapeutic response was excellent in 17 cases, good in 4 cases and poor in 1 case; in 7 days, 21 of 22 cases were bacteriologically cured and one failed.
3. Signs of gonorrheal recrudescence were evident in 2 of 18 cases when re-examined 10-14 days after the treatment. One of the two patients was retreated successfully with 4 g of spectinomycin.
4. In a comparative study with spectinomycin and pivampicillin, no statistically significant difference was found in the cure rate.
5. Side effects were slight. Four cases had slight pain at the injection sites for about 4-5 days.
