Plurydirectional tomography occupies a very important place in body section radiography. However, small lesions are not yet well shown and they require more refined investigations. The tomography with direct magnification has been described by several authors, but up to the present time, it has been difficult to perform macrotomography practically. Thus plurydirectional macrotomography with threefold magnification has been applied to study the petrous bone and the lung, using the newly designed equipment (Orbitom LT-UM). It must be strong enough to tolerate mechanical strain, and must have an x-ray tube with a fine focal spot and a large capacity. This apparatus fulfilles these requirements to a high extent. As a result, we have greatly increased the quality of the tomograms. The possibility of evaluating the morphological conditions of body sections by macrotomography yields valuable information for determining its real anatomical condition.

In this paper we preformed experiments for actual 3-fold abdominal magnification angiography system using various fine focal spot tubes-0.05mm and 0.1mm-in nominal size. From a practical point of view the two most impotant problems are X-ray tube capacity and geometirical arrangement of the devices in abdominal magnification angiography. Optimal and actual magnification radiography system was discussed by estimation of the composite modulation transfer function (MTF) of the magnification radiograms of the test object of Optiker Funk (Nr 10518) combined with water phantom of 20cm in thickness. MTF of movement was calculated theoretically with Morgan's formula in film density of 1.0. Following experiments were performed. 1. Comparison of various magnification systems of 0.1mm focal spot tubes in three hospitals. 2. Comparison of cassette changer system (Litton+hi-speed) and film changer system (PUCK+Special). 3. Comparison of various focal spot tubes (0.05mm, 0.1mm, 2mm). 4. Comparison of new high-speed radiographic system (Lanex+OG-1) and medium-speed system (hi-speed+Rx-s). With the present technical level, it is the most appropriate to apply non-bias tube of 0.1mm focal spot and high-speed intensifying system (Special+Rx-s) or new high-speed radiographic system (Lanex+OG-1) with the object of abdominal and serial magnification angiography. Film changer system (PUCK) is more advantageous than cassette changer system (Litton) in technical points of operation and field size. In uniform velocity of 8mm/s, there is no significant difference between MTF curve of 2mm focal spot tube and one of 0.1 mm focal spot tubes. The difference between general magnification radiography system and serial magnification angiography system should be recognized definitely.

The software has been described to reconstruct the vertical sections from the CT-1010 (EMI) transverse sections, using the off-line small computer system (TEAC) with 16K of core memory. The normal slice separation (10mm) gives sections with poor resolution in the vertical direction, so that we have used 3mm or 5mm overlapping scan. The matrix size of the transverse section is converted a 160×160 matrix into a 128×128 matrix to reconstruct the vertical sections easily. In order to improve the image quality of the vertical sections, we have used some correction techniques as follows. (1) Noise suppression by the slice integration. (2) Correction for the spatial distortion by interpolation of 3rd order. (3) Contrast enhancement using the digital filtering method. The vertical sections after reconstruction are transfered to the CT-1010 disc and displayed on the CRT using the system's program. Effective vertical sections were obtained by through this processing.

At the examination of using the CT-scans, we may not always be able to evaluate distinct information of the lesions, because of the complicated organisation of human body. In this case, we found that it is of considerable help in detection of the abnormalities to raise the X-ray absorption coefficient and emphaseze the difference of the X-ray absorption rate between the lesion and the probable normal area. This methode is so called the contrast enhancement. In this report, we analyzed the posibility that the considerable morphological information regarding with the hepatic lesion can be obtained by comparing scans taken before and after contrast infusion.
