Analyzing three-dimensional internal structure of object in an X-ray study is usually performed by using two or more of the incidents of an X-ray direction. In this report, we analyzed the three-dimensional position of tubes with a phantom by using both contrast media and imaging of one direction in the X-ray study. The concentration of the iodine in contrast media can be known by using the log-subtraction image of only the one-directional incident X-ray. Also the diameter of tube filled with contrast media is calculated by the concentration of iodine. So we can show the three-dimensional position of tubes geometrically, by the diameter of tube and the measured value of the film. We verified this method by an experiment according to the theory.

Fundamental experiments for developing a new oral contrast agent for MRI using blueberry juice (B. J.), namely, a newly found beverage rich in manganese were made. The signal intensity of B. J. in T_1WI was comparable to that of fat, suggesting that it had a positive contrast enhancement effect. For T_2WI, both a positive or negative effect were observed. Its contrast enhancement effect remained satisfactory no matter what the magnetic field strength was. Blood Mn levels of healthy volunteers were examined before and after being administered with B.J. The results showed that there was no change in the Mn levels, demonstrating the safety of B.J. B.J. is a sweet and safe oral contrast beverage of a new type exerting a positive contrast enhancement effect on T_1WI and positive or negative one on T_2WI. It is useful in upper-abdominal MRI and is expected to have wide use for clinical purposes.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of scattered X-rays from a square-wave chart in terms of Monte Carlo simulation study and actual measurements employing a non-screen film system. It was confirmed quantitatively from the simulation study that there exist scattered X-rays from both of the lucite and lead plate, along with L-characteristic X-rays from the lead plate in the chart. The lead mask (4mm width) on the chart could not eliminate the scattered X-ray completely. The difference in square wave response observed with and without the lead mask was about 2%. The scattered rays from the chart was able to be eliminated by the air gap method with a 15cm distance between the chart and film. In an actual MTF measurement for screen/film systems, it is considered that the effect of these scattered rays is almost negligible; however, it is required to be careful to scattered rays and L-characteristic X-rays.

In the past years, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) studies that has been used in medical imaging system have involved data collected on a discrete confidence-rating scale with five categories, though in principle ROC studies which are called method for continuously-distributed test results can be conducted with continuous scale. In this study, we investigate the advantage of this new rating method. Advantages were obtained from our experiments that used both discrete and continuous rating scale with same sample sets. From the results of ROC analysis using the CR mammography with simulated mamma phantom, the method for continuously-distributed test results performs identical estimation of area under the ROC curve (Az) compared with the discrete confidence-rating method, but performs good (1/3) standard deviation of Az between readers. When the range of Az lies 0.65-0.70 which are "difficult" performance of ROC experiment, we concluded that the method for continuously-distributed test results has the advantages of good statistical power and reliability of results compared with the discrete confidencerating method.

Considering radiographic techniques, it is important to know the characteristics of the X-ray generator. We investigated and analyzed the characteristics (percentage ripple of tube voltage, X-ray output linearity relative to radiographic time and tube current, reproducibility of X-ray outputs, tube voltage rise and fall times) of an X-ray generator of the inverter type. In spite of its compact size, 280mm×220mm×190mm, and light weight, this X-ray generator is capable of a maximum output of 80kW. At a tube voltage of 60-120kV and tube current of 50-1000mA, percentage ripple was approximately 1.1 to 5.4%. This value decreased as the tube voltage increased and current decreased. At 100kV and within the range of 50-800mA, the X-ray output relative to the current time product and irradiation time showed non-linearity as the irradiation time was reduced. A significant increase in non-linearity was noted as tube current decreased. At the minimum irradiation time, the non-linearity of the X-ray output reached 7 to 16%. As tube current decreased, non-linearity of 9.7 to 22.4% was observed at 60-120kV, and 50-800mA. The rise time f the tube voltage was 0.7ms (0 to Peak). The X-ray load resulted in a very slight change in the rise time, and did not present a problem. The fall time ranged from 1.3 to 8.8ms (Peak to 10kV). The time became longer as the current decreased. We believe that because the rise and fall times of the tube voltage waveform affect irradiation times and radiographic results, the X-ray load must not cause any changes in these factors. Ideally, the tube voltage waveform output should be square regardless of the X-ray load.
