In stereotactic radiosurgery, it is essential to match the target's coordinate obtained in treatment planning with the irradiation coordinate. The positional accuracy of irradiation becomes more critical when radiosurgery is conducted with a linear accelerator, in which treatment is completed through multiple arcs. The authors experimentally irradiated known coordinates according to data obtained from angiography, portgraphy and computed tomography. We also evaluated clinical cases in terms of irradiation accuracy by using portal images(40 cases, 72 points). The results indicated that the precision of our stereotactic radiosurgery system is ±0.3 mm. According to the evaluation of portal images of our clinical cases, the irradiation accuracy was within approximately ±0.3 mm on each coordinate, x, y, and z.

We investigated the effects of different degrees of misalignment on the performance of new grids in bedside radiography. Two types of new grids(a conventional grid with a grid ratio of 3:1 and a parallel hole grid)designed for bedside radiography were compared with a conventional 5:1 grid. The effects of scatter fraction, contrast improvement factor, bucky factor, and tolerance to misalignment on grid performance were examined. The scatter rejection and contrast improbvement of the new grids were significantly lower compared with a 5:1 grid at accurate alignment. However, the two new grids have much more tolerance to misalignment than the conventional grid. The two new grids may be used for bedside radiography without the need for accurate alignment.

Improvement in the performance of SPECT cameras has been remarkable. A highly sophisticated SPECT camera, the VERTEX EPIC from ADAC Laboratories, USA, was installed at our institution. The VERTEX has variable angle dual detectors and provides a fully digitized signal, the first such camera in japan. To examine the characteristics of this camera, we investigated its basic performance. The results of our study indicated the performance of this camera was satisfactory for clinical use. Intrinsic uniformity was 1.85%, intrinsic resolution 3.13mm, FWHM of SPECT(VXHR)8.2mm, and visual resolution 6.0mm. The VERTEX EPIC can play a role in various examinations in the field of clinical nuclear.

Several methods of testing statistically significant differences were used to evaluate the usefulness of one diagnostic imaging system compared with any other imaging system using ROC analysis. Comparison of usefulness between conventional methods such as the two-tailed paired t-test and 95% confidence intervals, and Jackknife method for ROC analysis, which was reported a few years ago, were investigated with actual two experimental results from ROC studies. From the testing results, it was considered that conventional methods reguire large numbers of readers in order to improve the reliability of statistically significant test differenxes between the two imaging systems. When determining differences between two kinds of imaging modalities, the use of the Jackknife method was better than conventional methods in terms of the reliability of test results, because conventional methods do not consider variances between readers and case samples.
