    Gun, only a district's name nowadays, was established in 7th century as a administrative unit of old Japan. Of course, there were the kuni (_??_)and the agata (_??_) before the Taika Kaishin (_??__??__??__??_), but the kuni and the gun were the first local administrative system, and had a new territory with a distinct boundary.
    In this article, I intend to clarify the following points about the gun by mean of the analysis of newly builtup guns written down in the Rikkokushi (_??__??__??_), the six chronicle in ancient time, and the reconstruction of some boundaries of the guns in the Heiancho (_??__??__??_), and others.
    (1) Almost all of gun's areas were quitely new ones, established by a partition of kunis and agatas, which were to be considered the spontaneous community. Though gun's. boundary followed frequently after rivers, watersheds or woods, at cultivated plains we found many boundaries of straight line by jori-systems (Fig. 2 shows it at the Yamato basin). The gun was therefore the pure institutional community and the formal area.
    (2) However, never ignored the gun's area geographical conditions. For example, there were many that it based upon the topographical condition, and had suitable goris (_??__??_) and population for the middle community between the kuni and the gori.
    In this point one may say that the gun had a bud to bloom the spontaneous, historical community and the substansive area later days, from the biginning of the formation of the gun.

    The Katsuragi Fan, situated in the south-western of the Yamato Basin is an alluvial fan well cultivated into rich rice-field. To irrigate these fields is used the irrigation tunnel named “Yokoido”, the characteristics of which are as follows;
    (1) Most of the“Yokoidos” may be found in the central part of the fan. They have been constructed by digging the underground straight from the scarp of the terraced field or along the river bank, and are generally about one meter in width and depth and from 60 to 80 meters in length.
    (2) The temperature of these water is rather low in summer and its quantity, being much varying, is controlled by the natural circumstances. It is to help the shortage of water supply from the pond and the rivers.
    (3) The “Yokoidos” seem to have been developed because of the abundance of underground water resourses as well as the gradual increase of rice planting in this area. And it must be noted that they were mostly constructed in Meiji Era.
    (4) Since the soil of the fan is much permeable it must be so often consolidated, or mended with the earth brought from other area.

    1. The character of international relationship is fluidity. Jean Gottman defined the geographical character as the system of relations. This sistem constitutes “iconography” and varies with “circulation”.
    2. “circulation” means the summary of systems of movements. It is the factor of combining and its function is “deplacing”. The conquest of space by circulation is the conquest of space by time. The nodulous regions of circulation systems grow gradually into the core of circulation. The modes of circulations can be classified as follows: the concentric circulation as the incipient type and the network circulation as the completed type. In special cases, the chain circulation is formed.
    3. Iconography is interpreted in Gottman's terms as the factor of resistance in the movement. This varies with the developement of mode of circulation and this is based upon the facts of cohabitation. From the facts of cohabitation, the national homogeneity is formed. This homogeneity causes the other national iconography to be refused.
    4. Political regions can not be identified with the physical regions. The consideration of the structure of political region must be started from the relationships between political powers, that is, from the functional relationships between core-regions and marginal regions. The regional structure is so variable that it must be considered from the relationships between various political regions.
