In a variety of human carcinomas, mutations of tumor suppressor gene p53 protein occur frequently and may lead to overexpression of a longlived mutant form of p53 protein. Using specific monoclonal antibodies, a total of 53 oral squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) were examined immunohistochemically for the expression of p53 protein. The results were as follows:
    1) Expression of p53 protein was detected in 29 of 53 cases (54.7%) of oral SCC.
    2) In oral SCC, there was no correlation between p53 protein expression and the degree of histological differentiation or the mode of invasion.
    3) Expression of p53 protein correlated with the grade of malignancy.
    4) These results suggest that alteration of the p53 gene occurs frequently in oral SCC and that immunohistochemical studies of p53 protein are valuable in the assessment of early recurrence, prognosis, proliferative activity, and malignancy of oral SCC.

Although mouthguards are used to protect the stomatognathic region in contact sports, their biomechanical efficacy has not been proved. The finite element method (FEM) is widely used in biomechanical studies involving static stress analyses. Studies of mouthguards especially require dynamic analyses. We performed an impact analysis of the maxillofacial region with the use of a pseudo 3 -D FEM model consisting of the head and neck in order to verify the efficacy of two mouthguard models against impact on the chin.
The effects of impact on the maxillary central incisors and the neck of the condyle increased remarkably when the mouth was open. With the use of a mouthguard, the efficacy of impact absorption extended to the maxillary central incisors and the lateral margin of the aperture. A soft-type mouthguard was more effective than a hard-type one. With the use of a mouthguard, stress was concentrated at the neck of the condyle. The use of a mouthguard decreased stress to regions adjacent to the cerebrospinal area. These results suggest that mouthguards are effective in preventing brain concussion.

Lymphoepithelioma is a non-keratinized, poorly differentiated type of squamous cell carcinoma. It appears to be closely related to lymphatic tissue. A case of lymphoepithelioma in the canine fossa of a 77-year-old female is reported. It was difficult to distinguish the tumor from an odontogenic lesion. The diagnosis was postoperatively confirmed by pathological examination of the resected specimen. The patient underwent radiotherapy after resection. The patient has been free of disease, with on signs of recurrence or metastasis for a year.

A case of ameloblastic fibrosarcoma in the molar region of the mandible of a 17-year-old girl is reported. Previously, the lesion had been diagnosed as benign ameloblastic fibroma on examination of a biopsy specimen. The final histological diagnosis after marginal resection of mandible was ameloblastic fibrosarcoma with ameloblastic fibroma. Therefore, another operation was performed. At present, the patient is well, and has had no problems as of 40 months since the last operation.

A case of hemangiopericytoma of the cheek in a 5 -year-old child is reported. Twenty-two cases of this tumor in the oral and maxillofacial region have been reported in the Japanese literature and only 2 occurred in childhood.
The tumor was excised with the skin and oral mucosa. As of 20 months after the operation, the patient has remained free of recurrence and metastasis. However, careful follow-up is required, because this tumor may recur and metastasize after surgical excision, even in the apparent absence of malignant histologic features.

A case of osseous choristoma in the buccal mucosa of a 9 -year-old girl is described. In the literature only 11 cases have been reported previously. The lesion measured 8.5×8.5mm and was removed under local anesthesia.
Histologically, the lesion consisted of a well circumscribed mass of dense lamellar bone, surrouded by a thin layer of fibrous connective tissue. The excised area of bum' mucosa healed and was free of recurrence after 5 months.

Rendu-Osler-Weber disease is rare, and only a few cases have been reported in Japan. Rendu-Osler-Weber disease is a heredity disease involving autosomal chromosome abnormalities. It is characterized by a familial pattern of inheritance. We report on a patient with Rendu-Osler-Weber disease in whom the main symptoms involved the oral mucosa.
A 56-year-old woman visited our department because of abnormal red spots on the tongue. Her past medical history included rhinitis and gastritis. In her familial history, her mother and grandmother had similar symptoms.
Symptoms of Rendu-Osler-Weber disease worsen with age. Careful follow-up is therefore necessary.

A pigmented nevus is defined as a hamartomatous proliferation of nevus cells. It is a very common skin lesion. Pigmented nevi of the oral mucosa are considered a rare lesion and only a few cases have been reported in Japan.
We recently encountered 2 cases of pigmented nevus. The first case was in a 26-year-old man. The nevus was located on the buccal mucosa and measured 4×5mm. The other case was in a 23-year-old woman. She had a nevus on the palatal mucosa for about 15 years. The nevus had grown slowly and measured 40×18×5mm at the time of presentation. She had no symptoms. The nevus was resected in both patients. There has been no recurence in either patient as of 2 year after the operation.

Clinicostatistical studies were performed in 855 patients with maxillofacial fractures who visited our clinic from 1974 through 1995. The mean age of the patients was 28.6 years, and male patients accounted for 74.6%. However, female patients and patients aged over 60 years have increased in the last 11 years (1985-1995) as compared with the previous 11 years (1974-1984). The mandible was involved in 84.8% of the fractures, and the major cause of injury was traffic accidents (45.4%). As compared with the former period, the number of patients involved in car accidents decreased whereas those involved in motorcycle accidents increased two-fold in the latter period. Forty-one percent of the patients were surgically treated with intraosseous wiring or mini-plates, usually accompanied by intermaxillary fixation (IMF). Non-surgical treatment was used mainly in patients without severe fracture line deviation. The average duration of IMF in the latter period was approximately 7 days shorter than that in the former period due to rigid fixation with mini-plates or earlier release of fixation to permit functional rehabilitation.

This case report describes a traumatic aneurysm of the maxillary artery that occurred after sagittal splitting osteotomy of mandibular ramus. The patient was a 19-yearold woman. Forty days after operation, the left side of her face rapidly became swollen. An incision was made in the affected area, and the swelling resolved. Several days later, facial swelling again rapidly developed. As a vascular lesion was suspected, we perfomed angiography via the right femoral artery by the Seldinger technigue. Angiography demonstrated the presence of a traumatic aneurysm in the area of the maxillary artery. Selective embolization was performed. After following up the patient for 14 months, we have found no evidence of recurrence.

Mucous cysts of minor salivary glands are classified into two types: extravasation type and retention type. Mucous retention cysts have an epithelial lining and are uncommon.
Our patient was a 9 -year-old girl with a painless mass at the right side of the hard palate. Radiographically, the right palatal bone was resorbed like a dome. The extirpated mass had a cystic cavity. Histopathologically, the cyst was lined mainly by simple cuboidal or columnar epithelium. Many goblet cells and the papillary proliferation of lined epithelial cells were also seen.
