Statistical data on a series of 161 cases of malignant tumors of the epipharynx observed in a period of 12 months at above institute is reported.
Of 161 cases of the tumors the swelling of the cervical lymph-nodes has been encountered in 83% and distant metastasis in 35%. The importance of chemotherapy has been stressed forthose cases with distant metastasis.
Most of these cases were treated with radium before 1955 and with X-ray and Cobalt-60 after 1956.
It has been revealed in the present series that three year survival rate was 22%(18% in cancer and 26% in sarcoma) while the five year survival rate was 17%(13% in cancer and 20% in sarcoma).
On evaluating this results according to the criteria proposed by the American Joint Committee on Cancer Staging and End Results Reporting (1959), five year survival rate was 100% in the first stage, 0% in the second stage and 3% in the fourth stage.
It is felt that more adequate criteria will be necessary for an accurate classification of the tumors of the epipharynx.
