Bleomycin has been used for squamous cell carcinoma with favorable results.
This drug brought into clinical field after numerous experiments done on animals and numerous test in the human.
The author used Bleomycin for 41 cases of cancer in the head and neck-18 cases of cancer of the maxilla, 8 cases of cancer of the larynx, 6 of the tongue, 6 of the pharynxand one each of the oral cavity, of the external ear, and of the pharynx.
Only two cases were found to have metastasis in the cervical lymphnodes.
The drug was given in IV or in IM or in IA with single dose being 15 mg. This was given twice a week except in administration into the artery.
The total dose given in one patient was 300 mg. In some cases, treatment was supplemented by 60Co irradiation.
Results obtained were summarized that markedly effective in 13 cases, effective in8 cases, slightly effective in 7 cases and not-effective in 13 cases.
Favorable results were seen in early cases rather than in late cases, in more localized type of carcinoma than in diffuse type and in well differentiated cases than in under differentiated cases.
It is suggested that combined treatment with irradiation often yields better results than in sole treatment with Bleomycin.
The side effect encountered included changes in the skin in hair and in blood vessels.
Fibrosis of the lungs was also seen in some of the cases, however no changes were observed in the blood picture which is often a major complication of other chemotherapeuticagents.
