From the Boutry report of 1963, which laid the foundations of the French nationalpolicy for scientific and technical information, the policy was materialized in CNDST as its superstructure, and then developed into the BNIST in 1973. This report traces the early history, and recent activities of the BNIST for the past 6 years.
The thesaurofacet is characterized by the combining of the advantages of faceted classification scheme and thesaurus to form a synthetic one with dual functions of classification and thesaurus. Here its framework is described and assessed in terms of: (a) conventional subject classes and application of facet analysis techniques; (b) setup of the classificatory part and its coordination with the thesaurus part ; (c) introduction of term compounding and consistency of the classification scheme; and (d) notation. Possibility of its future applications is suggested.
The computer processing system at the Patent Office is historically summarized and the explanation of the present system is given. The system consists of 2 units of HITAC M-170 computers for business operations. As the data to be processed are of variable length, voluminous,and subsystems are complicated, the total system will not be completed shortly, but it is steadily growing up.
In order to set up development strategy of a company, it is worth while to grasp the trends of technological development in the same industry. At that time accurate analyses of available information and reasonable structuring of them is requisite. As an example of survey of overseas chemical industries, the TDS Report, compiled by the Noguchi Research Institute for past 8 years, is briefly stated.
