    The gist and the background of “Specialized Information Program 1985-1988”, which was decided by the Federal government of Germany in June 1985, were outlined in comparison with the interim report of the fiscal year 1986. In the previous program “I & D” from 1974 to 1977, the establishment of GID (Association for Information and Documentation) and the consolidation of Specialized Information Centers (FIZ) were main object. However, in the new program, the role sharing between government and private enterprises was emphasized with a view to stimulate information demand in the circumstance of cooperation and competition of the world market.

    “Subject Term List in Chinese words” had been compiled by about 1,300 specialists who belonged to more than 500 sectors of Research Institute of Scientific and Technological Information, Peking Library and other institutes, and was published in Oct., 1979. It is the largest size and comprehensive thesaurus in China including about 100,000 subject terms (associate descriptors also) and covering almost all areas in social science and science & technology fields. The structure, compilation rule and the application of the List are described in detail.

    This system is one of the databases which require participation by its members and of which premise is to open all the data in it. Aiming at free technological cooperation and exchange among industries it was constructed by Kanagawa Prefecture in collaboration with enterprises located in it. The input data is 36 items such as major product, special and advantageous technology, technolagy to be wanted for cooperation, facility and equipment, which technologically characterize each enterprise. They are expressed in 2,000 characters and written by natural language including Kanji except for some coded items. 24 search items are accessed by natural language so that in addition to interactive searching procedures including menu-type it enables extensive searching. The information service started in Oct., 1986 covering data from 2,000 enterprisen.

    It is necessary to standardize both physical and logical formats for CD-ROM for enabling to use a CD-ROM file on different machines and systems with compatibility. There already exist a de facto standard for the physical format by Philips and SONY. Recently, a proposal for the logical format standard was published by ‘High Sierra’ Group and it is about to be discussed in the international organizations on standardization. This feature describes the content of the proposal in detail. Finally, relation between CD-ROM and CD-I formats is briefly explained.

    CD-ROM has rapidly evolved as a new information medium with large capacity, In the U.S. it is predicted that it will become two hundred billion yen market in three years, and thus CD-ROM is strategic target of database industry. Here in Japan the movement toward its commercialization has been active since this year. Shall CD-ROM bussiness ever conquer information market as an on-disk database or electronic publication? Referring to some cases of the applications in the U.S. the author views marketability and the future trend of this new optical disk medium.

    Technology inside an enterprise has been diverse recently so that management method of materials produced from it has become more complicated. Besides information management has become important in terms of industrial strategy. Since this Company started documentation by use of card system in 1963, it has developed IHI-TIPS (inhouse technical material Kanji-on-line system) and executed centralized management of the resources as well as on-line searching. The author describes background and progress of the system development since 1963, organizational matters and particularly relationship between technical sector and information & documentation sector. Construction and the content of databases are also described centered around those of IHI-TIPS.
