The citation analysis combining advantages of SCI and JCR is being used in a variety of ways among the user's community, apa from the original intention of the producer. For example; evaluation of research performance of university professors, determination of journal subscription at libraries, and selection of journals for publication. As a result, quality papers tend to concentrate on inclusion in the so-called core journals in English, keeping away from the national language journals, e. g. Japanese. The cited reference search by SCI is performed on the first author of cited reference and every secondary author should be conveed into the 1st author citation format in searching. The generation search, shared reference search, etc. are also available in this fashion. In addition, the research activities of any organization can be examined using the address field, which includes name of country as well as name of corporate source. In this Internet era, it becomes necessary to locate impoant and relevant pieces of information from the flood of information. In order to meet, therefore, much more diversified requests than ever, the more complicated information retrieval techniques will be required via multiple media with different attributes.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) was originally established in 1836 as the Library of the Army Surgeon General's Office. NLM today is the world's largest research library in a single scientific field, it's extensive collections and information services are indispensable to all health professionals, researchers and general public. MEDLARS is the computerized system of databases and databanks offered by NLM reside over 40 online databases containing about 18 million references. As NLM saw an increasing role for electronically represented images in clinical medicine and biomedical research, its bibliographic and factual database services would be complemented by libraries of digital images, distributed over high speed computer networks and by high capacity physical media. The goal is to make the print library and the image library a single, unified resource for medical information. In order to consider the future directions on medical databases in Japan, the current situations on research activities and database services in NLM were reviewed.

A prototype system was developed for automatically constructing a database from scientific and technical journal aicles in print. When a page of a printed technical paper is scanned with an image scanner, the system distinguishes between tables, graphs, and texts. And then in the texts, the logical attributes such as the title, the authors, the author's affiliations, the abstract, are recognized by using the page layout model. Lastly, the texts are processed with an OCR. The performance measurements show that the system has a sufficiently high recognition rate and processing speed and can come into operation.
