    Under such situation that advanced computer processing technology makes computer use enlarged and versatile, and prompt and accurate information gathering and exchange are needed. Information retrieval carries out service functions essential to information society. Taking Computing Center of Kyoto University as an example, the author describes the present status of information retrieval in a computing center of a university. Information retrieval plays an important role in research activities in a university. Its use has increased acceleratedly year after year, and various databases have been searched. Based on the use frequency and computer connecting time characteristics of information retrieval at university were analyzed. Under what searching needs researchers retrieve secondary information was also investigated. It resulted that for almost all of the databases keywords, titles and authors met about 90% of the searching needs.

    Drawing information LAN using optical disks was developed and introduced to rationalize maintenance and control works of instruments and process computers in the ironwork for improved productivity of steel making. It brought good results beyond our expectation. The overall system outline is briefed first. Then the following subsystems are described concerning the outline, characteristics and functions; (1) image information retrieval system, (2) construction drawing preparation system, (3) instrument register preparation system, (4) mailing system. The effect of the LAN and future subjects to be solved are mentioned.
