This paper describes the needs for scientific and technical information in support of research and education, engineering design and manufacture, government and public policy decision-making. It first identifies issues of current important in the delivery of scientific and technical information-changes in patterns of research and application, computer-based information in the process of research and of application, the emergence of electronic forms for informaiton delivery, the resulting changes in the very patterns of communication of the results of research, the development of new institutional means for management and delivery of information. Then it examines the critical stages in the research process and in translation of the results of research into application. Lastly it discusses the roles of the library in support of science and technology, developments in libraries that implement those roles including interlibrary networks, electronic means for access to information and for publication, and intermediation in use of information resources. Specific attention is given to digitized images.

NTT Human Interface Laboratories have developed a new 3D shape retrieval system. This system enables users to access a 3D database with descriptive words or 2D rough sketches, both of which are common descriptive media. 3D shapes are described by superquadrics which are used as an intermediate language between users and computers. Superquadrics can describe a wide variety of shapes with just a few simple parameters. These parameters can be used instead of descriptive words. By using these parameters, 3D shapes can be objectively represented by numerical data structures, and a modeled 3D object can be easily deformed by verbal description. This paper discusses the applicability of superquadrics and gives and gives an outline of the system.

Recently, library staffs arranged and compiled the original research papers that have been written by researchers for 33 years since National Institute of Radio logical Sciences (NIRS) established. This papers describes how the internal database of original research papers has been created. This is a small sample of hand-made database. This has been cummulating by staffs who have any knowledge about computer machine or computer programming.

The ultimate objective of R&D is to deliver a hit product. For this end various kind of informaiton is used. As the research environment goes on in changing times from 3C age (color TV, car, cooler) into 3I age (identify, imagination, innovation), it is essential to utilize information which incorporates not only technology, market, seeds, needs but also human sensitivity such as value, human behavior, trends, and significant to create concepts based on versatile aspects of information, set thema linked to break through. Goods brought by such R&D are kept predominated guaranteed by patents at markets. On the other hand patent information has high value indicating details of the technical development, so that researchers can not overlook it to keep up with recent pregress in technology. Also if patent information is porcessed into patent map, it becomes essential for persons in R&D to know trends in technology as well as in corporates.
