ILL System started in April, 1992. This system supports final stage of academic information acquisition by researchers, which enables to electronically process requests and other related information for photocopying and interlibrary loan in libraries. Compared to traditional ILL through mailing the current ILL System provides new functions so thet it is expected to have drastic increase in use of ILL. Such activated ILL seems to overcome some restrictions attributed to the traditional ILL and give great influences upon library services as a whole, leading to activate whole library activities.
This paper describes the outline of databases on STN, INPADOC and INPAMONITOR. These databases are produced by the European Patent Office. INPADOC contains records of about 19.0 millions patents published by 56 patent offices in the world from 1968 to date. Patents granted by different countries for an identical invention are treated as a patent family in this database. Also, INPADOC contains records of about 25.0 million legal status information published by 12 patent offices in the world. INPAMONITOR contains records of recent 4 weeks in INPADOC and is used SDI search. Records of patent family can be searched in INPADOC based on priority data.
The results of subject analysis are expressed with index terms in the area of information retrieval. Index terms are mainly divided into keywords and classification. And keywords are classified into natural terms and controlled terms while classification is done into enumeration and facet types. Two methods are attentioned as a indexing method used for databases: a method of automatically extracting natural terms from texts by computers, and a method of assigning descriptors according to thesaurus. Each method has advantages and disadvantages, so that it is necessary to choose an appropriate method which is able to meet characteristics and use purpose of information you deal with. A plural kinds of indexing terms might be also helpful.
