    The journals in each field of six subjects, mathematics, physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering, were reorganized in the order of citation ranking based on the journal citation ranking of Journal Citation Reports. The ranking in each field was compared with that of journals in natural science in general which were included in Journal Citation Reports. It was also compared with the rankings which had already been obtained in the previous years. The diffusion ratio, that is, what percentage of the whole citation articles are covered by upper ranked twenty journals, was calculated in each subject field.

    The followings were evaluated and desired by users in the Institute : (1) primary and secondary searching functions are satisfactory, and in particular secondary functions (limitting functions) are unique in JOIS with high use value ; (2) auxiliary searching functions (LOGON, inquiry resistration) should be improved ; (3) JICST thesaurus is convenient, but it is desirable that it be compiled to meet the on-line use (codification of terms and so on). This paper mentions how use of external on-line information retrieval systems is located or functions in the process of research activities in the Institute.
