The succeeding developmental objective to improve performance of online access to mass microfile in Computer Aided Image Retrieval (CAR) was to convert image into electronic digital image by image scanning technique with high resolution. The first step was easily attained by use of new solid elements, resulting in simultaneous access from plural user terminals ; high speed reading of image to be retrieved, which minimized monopolizing time of a file ; processing of retrieved image by a microprocessor and controlling of wait ; remote retrieval through communication line ; and electronic display of both character and image information at the same terminal. In sum it became possible to store image information in the form of microimage more efficiently and in higher density than in any other storage medium, and to construct electronic document retrieval system by means of software.

BLLD is a wellknown agency which lends original materials and provides photocopying services throughout the world. Gathering materials exhaustively as well as being in close cooperation with other libraries BLLD keeps unparalled sufficiency, accuracy and promptness of the services. They are supported by application of rational procedures prepared based on analysis of experiences, a comprehensive mechanized system including belt conveyer for transporting large amount of materials inside the building, automatic listing, and flexible personnel organization and education, and so on. Requests of lending of photocopying are mostly sent by mail, but requests through telex or computer link (DOCLINE) have increased gradually in terms of promptness and convenience. Automatic Document Request Service (ADRS) which is directly connected to secondary data services is also expected. There are problems in BLLD, that is, on purchasing and maintenance of enormous amount of materials, keeping the services prompt, increase of expense, royalty and copyright involving publishers. As one of the directions to solve these problems electronic document delivery method has been paid attention and studied actively.
