"Data journal" is considered to be an effective method to promote the preservation and reuse of research data by utilizing the conventional "publishing" framework, but it is also in the process of forming concepts internationally. In this paper, we introduce "Polar Data Journal", a data journal published in January 2017 as a practical case in Japan, to provide concrete materials for construction and operation of data journals in Japanese academia. In particular, we describe the following 4 issues: (1) background of publishing data in the polar science community, (2) consensus building process in National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR), (3) system requirements and workflow for proper handling of research data, (4) collaboration between submission system and data publishing infrastructure.

In March 2014, NTT DATA started the digital archive project, which digitizes the manuscripts (handwritten documents) possessed by the Vatican Library. NTT DATA built the digital library (DigiVatLib) that became the sole portal of digitized materials of the Vatican Library by utilizing know-how of digital archive and search-related technologies having been accumulated over many years. In the new digital library, we use many new technologies, OAIS, an international standard relating to long-term preservation, FITS, a format suitable for long-term preservation of image data, and IIIF, a standard for viewing images mutually. As a result, it also provided a platform which is also excellent for utilization of contents.

Blockchain is a key technology of bitcoin. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency system created based on the document released in 2008 by an unidentified programmer named Satoshi Nakamoto. It seems the appearance of bitcoin partly stems from frustration over centralized system which is inefficient and stays unchanged even though IT has been growing dramatically, as well as distrust on its information-handling capability. While using blockchain technology on social system would be able to generate a new world, robust and low cost, some information about blockchain are too optimistic, or/and generated by each party's standpoint not based on real business. The comprehensive and unbiased argument is necessary not only by technical aspect but also by social scientific point of view.

Genes & Genetic Systems, the official journal of the Genetics Society of Japan, has been publishing papers related to genetics for nearly 100 years. Papers published in the journal had become all English and their PDFs have been accessed through the J-STAGE system since early times. From 2013, the journal started a few new efforts supported by JSPS(Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) to enhance its internationalization and to make itself one of the top Asian journals of genetics. Those include increasing numbers of foreign editors and advisory board members, providing English-editing to the accepted manuscripts and advanced publication. I explain some details and the outcomes of those efforts and then discuss ensuing problems, some of which have been resolved but others still are remaining. Future perspectives of the journal are also discussed.

In the age of big data, an important challenge will be not only to build up human resources with high data analytical skills, such as data scientists, but also build the fundamental analytical strength of individual companies and local governments that make up a region. As well as the staff belonging to the plan and statistics sections as before, the acquisition of the constant and basic analytical ability has been demanded for the staff belonging to all sections. I introduce construction process and a past action, a result about said the acquisition of the basic analytical ability for the staff belonging to all sections.
