For the business of custom synthesis in fine chemicals, the new efficient intermediate database system has been established. Using the database, the new exploration method of investigational new drugs (IND) has been studied in order to apply company chemicals. The database consists of INDs derived from the commercially available databases, and the corresponding intermediates extracted from Chemical Abstracts (CA). By performing the new database system with a query substructure, the concrete intermediates and the corresponding INDs have been found. Building on a number of ongoing industry initiatives, the objective of Project COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of NeTworked Electronic Resources) is to develop and maintain agreed international Codes of Practice governing the recording and exchange of vendor-generated online usage data. Release 1 of the COUNTER Code of Practice, focusing on journals and databases, was published in January 2003, and has since been widely adopted by publishers. It is estimated that already 50% of the annual output of articles covered by the Science Citation Index are in COUNTER-compliant journals. The draft of Release 2 of this Code of Practice, which contains a number of refinements, was published for comments in April 2004, and will be available in final form in January 2005. Work has also begun on a separate Code of Practice covering e-books and e-reference works.
