    Activities of scientific and technical information organizations in Russia based on a survey carried out during autumn of 1994 are reported. This paper outlines recent conditions after the collapse of former Soviet Union and presents activities in eight major information-related organizations including International Center for Scientific and Technical Information, Russian State Central Scientific Medical Library, Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology, All-Russian Institute for Science and Technical Information, Natural Sciences Library of Russian Academy of Sciences, Scientific and Technical Information Center of Russia, Russian State Library and All-Russian Scientific and Research Institute of State Patent Examination. All of these organizations face economic difficulties brought about by financial crisis and inflation as well as shortage of the state budget. In addition, the domestic information processing technology using computers and computer networks is generally inferior to that of developed western countries due to lack of growth of information infrastructure in Russia.

    This paper discusses the support functions for reading necessary for the electronic library. After examining the functions for reading in general, such functions as use of reference books, memos and bookmarks, reading aloud, translation are examined. In the final section, advanced functions for reading to be included in the future system are discussed.

    There has been increase in the Statistical software during the past. Many medical researchers do not have the statistical knowledge. Software advisory system offer a possible solution. I developed an expert system for the automated selection of software on main frame. Using this system, medical researchers can analyze them without special knowledge of computer svstem.

    In medical treatment field, the introduction of computers began since about 20 years ago, but so far, various application systems were in the state of working independently, but at last the arrangement of the base considering the spread of medical information system toward 21st century has begun. At present, the works of standardizing medical information system are in progress, making the electronic preservation of medical images, the transmission of medical images, networks, health preservation and medical treatment cards, electronic clinical charts and climical inspection as the sections. In this paper, according to the state of the research and development of these standardizations, it is introduced how are multimedia useful for medical treatment. Moreover, as for the electronic preservation of medical images, the technical standard is being mode, therefore, this is explained.
